Love the case the only problem is that it smells like smoke...

Hey,

So I got my SM8 Merlin today and opened it up. I noticed that it really smelled like it had been in a fire. If anyone has ever smelled something that has come from a house fire you know the smell. Anyway, I wiped it down with a few cleaning wipes and put the system and the case together thinking that the smell might go away. It didn't.

When I turn it on and the fans start going it really stinks up the computer room. The back part of my house now smells like it has smoke damage.

This is the first Caselabs case that I have ever bought.

Is this a normal thing with these cases? And if so, does the smell go away?

I'm curious as to the answer you receive with this question. I just cleaned a family friend's computer and he smoked in his house. I've fixed the discoloration and brown-ridden dust problem, but the smell is almost embedded into the case it seems. I used 'Super Clean' on the outer panels, canned air, and Clorox wipes with no luck. The smell has dispersed some, but turning on the fans is the real deal mad.gif.

That's odd. CaseLabs employees are expressly prohibited from having camp fires in the building....it's even in the employee handbook!

Curious as to where you may live? If it shipped through an area that's had recent fires, that's a possibility. I've never once heard this complaint before, so I'm at a complete loss.

Hmmm... Never had to deal with that problem, fortunately. On their own, the cases have virtually no smell. The powder we use is made here, so there aren't any toxic chemicals in it like some of the stuff coming out of China rolleyes.gif Maybe someone who's dealt with a similar problem can chime in.

EDIT: After rereading your post, I would look at your PSU (or other electrical components). There is a much greater likelihood of that being the source of the problem. The materials in the case are inert and meet very strict US environmental standards, so it's really doubtful that they're the cause.

I have never found them to smell like smoke but they do have a unique smell that I now associate with a new CaseLabs case.
Its like the new pc parts smell when you smell it you know good stuff is happening!.

I live in Alabama.

It must have been shipped through smoke somewhere or something. The inside of the case was just saturated with the smell. When I took my hardware out I moved it to the living room to start and the wife made me go back to the computer room once I opened the case door. I think that maybe FedEX had it in a warehouse or in a truck that was near the wildfires or something of that nature. It smelled like it had came from a office fire.

I did the RMA on it on Wednesday and my computer room is just now starting to clear out. lol

The oldest kid said it reminded him of BBQ.

Thanks again for the quick response. And thanks again for being so awesome.

That's just so weird to me, still.

I wonder if it was shipped through an Arizona facility that maybe had dealt with recent wildfires or something? Hey, there could have been an electrical fire on the van it was in....something. Who knows? What I do know is, this is one for the odd-ball book. smile.gif

It's the round grommets.

They sent me a e-mail right after they got my case back in.

Apparently the round black grommets that are next to the front of the case on the Merlin are the stinkers.

They sent me another set this last week and they were VERY smelly too.

I think that it is something that they are working on with the manufacturer of the grommets to get fixed.

Can also verify this, got my SM8 a few weeks ago and it smells like smoke...
