First home network question

Thread Starter
G'day,

I just had some Ethernet ports installed in my house that allow me to connect my pc to my router. When i directly plug my pc to the router it works fine and i can access the internet and what not but when i use the ports in the wall it comes up. Unidentified network no network access. I'm fairly new to networking any help would be great.

Kind Regards

Are the ports connected with cables to your router? Are they pluged into a switch? We need more informations.

Is your modem a router/modem combo, or does it go:

Internet > Modem > router

If that's the case, and you're bypassing your router, then your hosts (PCs) aren't getting IP addresses assigned to them (which is one of the responsibilities of the router)

The cable you had installed should be going directly into the router, the same place you plug your PC into when it works.

its a modem router combo. When i plus it straight into the modem its fine.
Just to be sure, you are patching both ends of the cable, right? You are plugging your PC into the wall outlet which then likely terminates near your router, and you then plug in another cable from the termination to the router? If you are using the same port, the cable may not be terminated correctly.

Where do all the ports terminate at? Pictures might be helpful. Are they all going into a patch panel? Do you have a bunch of loose wires?
