So you're saying their income would stay the same if they cut 90% of their marketing budget? What makes you think that?

First of all for everyone that doesn't know this: marketing does not compose of just advertising.

For some series like COD, Battlefield, GTA, etc. I would say that a huge slash in marketing (at least specifically the advertising portion of marketing) would not kill the sales of such titles. Yes, the LAUNCH day sales may be affected, but I think those titles have such a huge fanbase that cutting out all forms of TV/radio/Internet advertising (by that I mean actually having it advertised everywhere) wouldn't make this fanbase of consumers any less aware about a new upcoming release for those titles. A simple post on Battlelog/the publisher's home page/Origin/Facebook/Twitter/etc. pages should do all the advertising that's needed. Again, yes, launch day sales would definitely be affected. But I think in no time when the gamer crowd is all "omg how did you get this? There's a new GTA?" everything will fall back into place. Honestly I think it would be a cool marketing idea/experiment to not say ANYTHING about a huge release like Half Life 3, and suddenly just throw it up on Steam and store shelves for sale. I would love to see the market explosion that would happen from that; I think news outlets would practically do all the advertising for them.

Why is it that no matter what the article is about, every single news thread on OCN devolves into silly inapplicable car analogies?

Yes, popular car models get remade every year, generally with only minor improvements. That is about as far as you can take that in regards to modern game publishers.

No one I know goes out and buys a new Toyota Corolla every year for full price and just leaves their old one sitting in the garage, just because it is no longer the latest model. Your car doesn't just stop working because a new model comes out and the manufacturer no longer feels the need to support the previous one. There are no servers to maintain for your car to function online, no player bases that dwindle and render driving ineffective.

Cars are tangible, physical goods. They can last nearly forever with proper care. They can be resold, modified, upgraded, etc. They are items we rely on for our daily lives, not merely entertainment. There are no car DRMs, servers, banlists with buggy automatic administration, etc. They aren't sold incomplete with the promise of future DLCs to allow you to put them in reverse or roll down the windows. Crash testing is performed extensively before putting the product in consumers' hands, rather than months/years later, or even not at all.

The list can go on nearly forever. Can we stop this nonsense and get back to the topics the article covers now?

EA is a big player, and they produce big brands. if you have a big brand like battlefield all you need is just viral campaign via youtube or other channels
as they say, good product sells itself. so yes, they dont need such big marketing budget. its way overblown. i dont like them but EA is the king of the publishers so they are clearly overspending if not outright defrauding their shareholders. i mean they take in 4 billion and make profit of 50m while marketing budget is 700m? i mean come on, thats not even funny ...
