Seagate HDD Chirp??

Thread Starter
have a 2Tb Seagate that ive had for a while, every once and a while it would go idle/come out of idle and make a little chirping sound.

the other day im on my cpu and i start hearing it chirp over and over and over, i checked the task manager and disk usage was @ 100% and the drive would not respond so i shut down the pc. i turn it back on and the drive chirps for a few seconds then stops as the bios loads, now the drive is not recognized.(hdd activity light still goes off)

i know clicking or scratching sounds pretty much mean a dead drive but what about chirping? a quick google search showed some results on another forum saying things like turning up power usage fixed similar problems.(mines already on high performance) is the drive dead? or is this a known or fixable issue?

http://superuser.com/questions/470334/extremely-high-disk-activity-without-any-real-usage (there is a few other solutions that i didnt try either because im not sure they would work or i didnt follow the logic.) currently using windows 8 aswell.

kind of sounds like this ( not my video )

Most likely that the read head has given up the ghost. Hope that the drive didn't contain any important data that wasn't backed up.

Since the drive is pretty much toast any way, you could try tapping on housing with a rubber mallet or gently banging it on a soft towel so see if the drive head will free up long enough to grab your data.

Some others have claimed success in reviving the chirp of death drive by putting them in a freezer for a while, but haven't ever tried that trick so can't comment.

How much trouble / risk you want to take really depends on the value of the data on the drive.

hmm, i may give the tapping thing a try. not sure i could bring myself to putting it in the freezer... if you freeze it then pull it out it will surely attract condensation, i cant imagine that is good for a harddrive.

thanks.

Long term neither of my suggestions would be good for the drive smile.gif

Just trying to help you get whatever you needed off of it before replacing it. Hoping the best for you.

luckily there was nothing important on the drive, just a bunch of media. still going to be a hassle to RMA and put all the data back on it. was kinda hoping it would be an issue from the new windows 8 patch and would be a simple fix.(apparently not the case)sad-smiley-002.gif

Unfortunately I don't believe so. If you think it's a W8 problem you could put the drive in an external enclosure or even hook it up to another computer running Windows 7 and see if the OS detects the drive.

However it really sounds to me like a dead drive.
