Cheapest Programming Certificate Associate Substitute?

Hello Overclock.net,

I am about half way through a programming associate degree program, but this is not quick enough for me. I want a job which requires either an associates or programming certificate. I know nothing about certificates.

Basically I want to know what is a possible certificate which would be acceptable for this sort of job? I have C++ programming knowledge, so lets try to make it a C++ certificate. I will be able to take other languages as well for a certificate. I want to take it online unless I can get some classroom experience here in Nebraska...

So guys please help me figure out an employer approved associate degree substitute programming certificate.

I do not mean associate substitute by it taking two years, or costing the same... I mean one that can get me a job just as the associate degree would get the job... I know the associate would look better, but I am looking for the minimal acceptable substitute.

Please keep in mind time and money are of very great concern.

I'll give you the short version if you don't prefer the long version. There is nothing that schools can teach you in programming that you cannot teach yourself. Save your time and money and learn C++ yourself, there are too many resources online. Wish I would've done this instead of piss thousands of dollars away into a degree. The only thing a college degree does for you is try to reinforce what you learned by making you take tests. There are many programmer tests/puzzles like Project Euler.

The Long Version Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
If you can program yourself out of a paper bag you'd be able to pick up a programming job. Most CompSci degree holders couldn't code a line worth anything.

A certificate or degree != knowing how to code.

There is no such thing as an employer approved degree. Each place of employment is going to have their own set of standards. My advice, go to the cheapest community college possible. Forget all the other courses that don't help you in programming. Focus your time learning programming. C++ programming is not easy, a certificate or degree just tells employers that you can start and finish something. Hate to say it but a college degree/certificate is the new high school diploma.

anoob,

Thanks for the response. I read both long and short. The way you're talking I do see that is true, though I believe my employer automatically disqualifies me without holding a degree or certificate.
