Getting ready to dive into the world of SSDs

Is there any reason that my ASUS M5A88-V EVO wouldn't play nice with a samsung 840 Evo SSD? My caviar died suddenly and I want to speed up my OS.

I've never had trouble with compatibility on SSDs. I have added them routinely as performance boosts to old Pentium 4 boards with only a single SATA port and still they function fine. Granted I use ADATA SSDs for budget stuff, but I can't imagine there are compatibility issues with the modern kind of hardware you are dealing with in any major brand.

great, thanks. looking to get a regular HDD as backup, having a hard time finding anything around 250 GB that's cheap enough to store files on while the samsung chugs through most of my PC games...

I don't see a reason why - I have the older M4A88TD-V EVO/USB3 version of that board, and my Samsung 830 boots up fine, albeit probably slower than if it was connected to an Intel platform SATA port.
