I want to setup a second power switch stretched to my desk. If i spliced and soldered a second connection at the base of the sw header on the motherboard would it work?

First off, dont solder on the mb just splicw onto the wire.
If the switches are in parallel it will work but in series it will not.

why not just get one of these and save yourself some trouble and make it easier to connect the front panel connectors when you remove your motherboard

or id you just one to split that one connection http://www.performance-pcs.com/catalog/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=34_289&products_id=21699

or the diy route you will need a crimper and maybe a soldering iron depending on how small you can crimp the ends

Yes.... to turn a motherboard on, all that needs to happen (from a switch perspective) is the two pins close a circuit for a second or less.
Once again...

There are also remote starter kits for a PC as well. It's just like the key fob remote starter for a car, but for the PC.
