Worth getting 4GB GTX 770?

Long story short I'm thinking of switching my 7970 for a 770. I do play a few games with Phys-x and could use Nvidia for GPU accelerating my video editing and after effects which doesn't support AMD. My friend loves my GPU and I'm trying to help her build a new computer so I figured instead of buying a new GPU and her trying to figure out how to overclock it, just buy mine from me and I upgrade.

However I had one question. I've tried to "future proof" my computer the best I could, and it's held up pretty well, but was wondering if I really needed a 4GB GPU? What I'm thinking is, no.

I use a single 1920x1080p monitor... that's it. Nothing more and even then only at 60hz.

My 7970 is OC @ 1100/1700 and maintains decent frames for Planetside 2. Would 4GB do anything really? would it even be a smart investment by the time newer games come out in the far future I'd probably have to upgrade CPU and GPU anyways right? Since I'd max out the core clock before needing more VRAM or CPU eventually bottleneck hitting my max overclock. Is 2GB enough? I play on Ultra settings with all the AA options etc enabled and my 3GB 7970 seems fine so I don't want to go down to 2GB but higher core/memory clocks unless it's going to help my frames.

Thoughts? - Thanks! Have an awesome day.

if planning on going SLI one day then get the 4GB model (think ahead), yes even @ 1080p.
but if staying a single card configuration then just get the 2GB model and game on..
even 2GB in SLI will rock out a 1080p.
I speak of SLI just in case you do one day.

2gb will be sufficient for 1080p and even much more higher resolutions. I play my games on my 770 SLI 2gb @ 3100x1744p, which is 3,386,800 pixels higher than 1080p, and i still don't run out of V-ram even with Crysis 3 at max settings X2 SMAA.

I can also see why you want to switch your 7970 to a 770 to get "full" gaming experience with physX, and performance wise, you won't see any decrease, so yeah, if i was you, i would sell it to your friend and get a 770 2GB, not 4gb. You would run out of raw GPU power before you run out of V-ram.

BTW, if you are getting a 770, get the MSI gaming edition, or any 770 with the NCP4206 voltage controller. There is an MSI Afterburner mod that enables you get full voltage control, so you don't need to spend extra money on Unlocked 770's (e.g. MSI Lightning e.t.c). My 770 with unlocked voltage does 1424Mhz biggrin.gif

Wow thanks! I'm not sure if I'd ever go SLI tbh. I don't PC game enough to ever buy a second card over simply upgrading so I'm probably going single card GPU until I have to do a overhaul on most all parts. But the times I do PC game I like maxing out any game @ 1080p and hopefully maintaining no lower than 40fps ideally.

side note:
having an X79 mobo (full ATX Noobtooth) with all those lanes but having a single GPU looks awkward..

Whoever said I don't use all my lanes?

Live Gamer HD
Sound Card
USB 3.0 Extensions.

"Noobtooth" <-? huh?
Sorry but I have a full tower build so a micro wouldn't fit in my case. Looks pretty damn sexy actually.

You can do that with a single 770; however, you will ONLY run at max in-game settings, but NOT max AA settings. Right now, not even the fastest single GPU can run all games at MAX settings with MAX AA settings and maintain above 60 FPS on 1080p (Unless extensively overclocked).

I would highly recommend you use that extra cash to go SLI at some point, so that when you game, you game with ease at MAX settings wink.gif. SLI has been fine-tuned to work perfectly (still has room to improve), and i personally don't see myself ever going back to a single GPU.

Dual GPU's are just too bad-ass and smexy devil-smiley-019.gif

I agree with Yungbenny, at 1080p you only need a 2GB GTX 770 You'd rarely see any kind of benefit from a 4GB card at that resolution.
