hard drive enclosure question

Thread Starter
ok i just got the adaptec acs-200 hard drive enclosure, it supports firewire and usb 2.0, first isn't firewire most of the time faster when you use it for data transfer because i tested it using HD tach and i got about 26mb/s while using firewire and i got 36mb/s on usb 2.0. also on the back of the enclosure there are two firewire ports, does that mean that i can hook up a second firewire cable and double the speed, from 26 to 52? and if not what is the use for that second connection, because it does not say in the owners manual anything about it?

Nah you can't plug both into the pc...the 2nd firewire port is for daisy chaining other firewire devices off the external enclosure, for example a video camera or summat if you've only got one firewire port on the case.

As for the speed, what type of test did HD tach do? USB2 is generally faster for burst transfers, i.e small files, while firewire is better at sustaining a constant high transfer rate for larger files, like videos. Also, check the task manager for the system processor usage while using USB2 and firewire. I'd bet a few pennies that the firewire uses less % CPU.

Personal situation and preference in the end.

Strange to see USB2 come out on top tbh, maybe try SiSoft Sandra's hard drive tests as i'm more familiar with those.

Also, the CPU utilisation isn't the same,

USB 3%
FW 0%

Up to you

ok i used sisoft and i got basically the same thing within 1-2mb/s second, and to me a 3% cpu use is not even noticable. here are the pics.

this is the usb

this is firewire

Hmmm HDTach said 35Mbps / 27Mbps and Sisoft says 33Mbps / 28Mbps...

i'm surprised to see that much of a difference. But really, it's up to you which method you use - i'd pick firewire due to the fact it impacts as little as possible on you CPU usage, and that i've a lot of other USB peripherals and might as well use the firewire if possible. I've also got a external enclosure with the Oxford 911 firewire chip (34Mbps IIRC) which is a lot better than the Promise firewire chip which is what you've got I suspect.

So, final decision is up to you matey
