Virus? Can't access harddrives or individual folders anymore

Hi,

after clicking on a file I downloaded, which was labelled as an .avi video file, I can't open my Start->"Computer" folder anymore. Well, it opens but the drives are not showing, just that green loading bar on top is slowly filling. Same for individual folders, they open slowly but the files inside are not shown. After a reboot it works normally again, for the moment. Probably until I click the wrong file again. The "Malwarebytes" anti-malware scanner does not find any malware. I honestly don't even know what "malware" is. Does malware include viruses? Does a malware scanner scan for all the viruses a virus-scanner scans for too?

Does anybody know that problem? Any possible solutions besides formatting all my drives and re-installing windows? System is as in my signature.

Thanks.

Malware and virus are synonymous.

So what you're saying is that these problems occurred after this .avi file was opened? If I may ask, where was this downloaded from?

Try out Avast Anti-virus. I've been using it for countless years, and it's awesome. It has the option to set a boot-time scan. That's more effective than scanning from within Windows. You can also get a anti-virus live CD from Kasperky. You stick it in and boot to it instead of Windows. From there, you scan the entire drive. That is the absolute most effective way to catch viruses.

If you choose to try Avast, disable or uninstall Malwarebyes. Usually, you never want two anti-virus software programs running at the same time.

If you need any help on any of this, let me know.
