i7 920 vs 930 vs 950

Thread Starter
I have a 920 C0 from an original purchase Dell machine (early 2009). I have it OC'd to a stable 3.6. But I'm thinking I could go farther with a 920 D0, 930 D0, or 950 D0, all of which I can get used for a similar price.....so the question is, which one to buy? My gut tells me the 950 is likely to be the better quality out of a given wafer, and I'd likely be better off with it in the long haul. Advice?
my rig:
-NZXT Tempest 410 case w/ 8 fans
-Windows 7 Home Premium (64-bit)
-i7 920(C0)@2.67GHz (stable overclock @ 3.6 GHz) w/ Corsair H60 cooler
-EVGA X58 SLI3 mobo
-12 GB Kingston HyperX RAM (1600)
-XFX 'Double D' Radeon HD 7950 (stock speed, latest drivers)
-Seagate 1 GB HDD (OS), Toshiba 1.5 GB HDD
-Seasonic 750 watt PSU

If they all cost the same, grab the 950. You probably won't be able to push either of them past 4.0 - 4.2 Ghz so don't expect a whole lot of performance gain. If you can grab a 970/980X/990X however, that will give a sizable performance boost.

What is the machine used for? For daily use, I'd say go with a Xeon L5639, 6 core, 32nm, for 90$ on eBay. Top multi on it is 16 for all 6 cores...

Gaming, I would just overclock it a little more.. you could probably get 3.9Ghz out of it. I recently pulled a 920 that will do 4.1GHz out of my game machine.

This is both my main machine and my gaming rig. Don't think I want to be quite that adventurous, particularly because this Xeon chip is not supported by my motherboard (which has been a real sweetheart). Really just wanted to grab a D0 chip instead of my C0, and was tempted when I ran across a used 950 chip for $100...

I wouldn't. It's the same difference. Just overclock your C0.
