GPU Suggestion

Thread Starter
Looking to improve upon a PC I already have. It really doesn't do anything atm. An absolutely entry level build, but have potential.

Got this board: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813130638
Got this PSU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817171060

What would be my best option? Upgrade GPU or CPU? As far as I know, it can support Vishera.

With the new GPU core, CPU upgrades are not worth it. A $250 card like the GTX 760, 660 Ti, or 7950 can net you 60k PPD or more depending on OC, and I think that would be about the most powerful card you'd want to run on that PSU. In comparison, the $200 FX-8350 will usually get around 12-15k PPD stock.

Definitely GPU as Zagen30 stated.  Core 17 GPU WUs are where the points are right now.  I picked up a used GTX 670 for under $240, and its hammering away WUs at 95-100k PPD estimate.

A 7950, or 7970 are also nice options in the same price range.  If you can get a 7970 that OCs nice 1250Mhz+, you can see numbers around 130k+ ppd.

Just as I was about to think CPU was the way to go. Thanks I'll look into it.

Check out this thread:

It has some current numbers submitted by ocn folders on what their GPUs are doing.

It's possible for me to acquire this PC:

Core 2 Quad 8300 (~$50)
No Hard Drive (Here's why: )
4 GB DDR3 1333 OC-Z RAM (~$40)
650 TX Corsair PSU (~$80)
EVGA 9800 GT (~$30)
ASUS P5Q3 Motherboard (~$150)
Halo 2 iBuyPower Case ($?)
DVD-RW/CD-RW IDE Drive (~$10)

Board has 2 PCI-E slots. Figure I could throw two GPUs in and fold (of course to whatever the PSU can handle). How much you suppose this PC is worth? I have my ideas, but still. Prices are estimates of what I found online. Motherboard is pretty hard to find, and only one guy is selling on eBay for a very high price. He told me he was looking to get around $100. It also has a Windows Vista Product Key.
