[VC] AMD Radeon R9 290X with Hawaii GPU pictured, has 512-bit 4GB Memory - Page 92

It's amusing to think that if Mantle does have the claimed performance boost AMD will be the only way to run 3x4K and get decent fps at highish settings, even after Nvidia's recent 4K announcement.

That said, we're doing the wrong thing by comparing Nvidia's 7__ to the R9___. Really, what with Mantle's release date, we'll get a better idea once Steam OS, GTX 8__ and Mantle have been out for at least a month.

That depends your statement can only be true if GTX 8XX is on 28nm otherwise they can't be compared.
One can only do so much with a given process node wink.gif
In 9 months when the 20nm cards drop it will be so that AMD and Nvidia are on par on non Mantle driven application unless Nvidia somehow gets extra performance from somewhere.

People still compare Intel and AMD even though they're on different nodes. The node doesn't matter, just when it's released. And we can't consider R9___ to be considered a complete release until Mantle is out - which is close to when Maxwell is slated for release, right? So that's a fairer comparison. And unless Maxwell is delayed it will have to be 28nm anyway.

I think you hit it on the head, practically speaking. So, Mantle release is sometime in 2014?
why are we bothering getting excited about 290x now...might as well start getting excited about Maxwell too...like 290x, we have no specs, no reviews, and no price

Can someone please start a Maxwell hype thread and maybe nvidia will start taking pr-orders by Christmas with witcher 3 bundle

Mantle should be released 2 months after BF4 is released so that is quite some time away indeed.
I would be disappointed if they do Maxwell on 28nm as it was or rather should be designed for 20nm

the 290x will be a beast we don't know how much of a beast I promised myself to wait for 20nm but a aftermarket 8GB version with more displayports sounds like music to me.

I'm very interested in seeing how nvidia implements a gpu with an arm cpu on the same pcb and what performance gains does it really bring to the table.

makes me wonder the cpu gpu switch AMD is doing and the co processing that Nvidia is doing how will it play out.
For AMD it will make them less dependent on compilers and will boost in HSA specific written programs but will they add a Temash soc or just a couple of cores to their die interesting times for sure.

That is still only 2 cards. What is your point? 290x is single gpu so it is 2 cards and 2 gpus
