come on. Johan is probably one of the most brilliant engineers in the industry in the league of Tim Sweeney (Epic) and John Carmack( Id ).he knew what perf improvement (atleast a minimum) he was likely to get and the effort to design Mantle. so do you really think he went through all the effort for less than 20% improvement. This guy has been working on consoles for a long time and knows exactly how efficient they are. its few people who own Nvidia hardware that are hoping BF4 Mantle doesn't crush BF4 DX 11.1 . thumb.gif

wow dude, you never cease to amaze me how you will always argue that speculation > concrete proof.

it seems to be common among few people who own amd hardware.

Just making sure here, but is there concrete proof? I still wonder where 20% came from. Was it spoken at GPU14 or just speculation by the masses after?

Well then it is a waiting game.

In all likelihood Mantle would offer between 0% or worse performance difference (if the programmers are incompetent) and around 2% for good basic usage with some rare programmer Wizards possibly achieving more (4%? 10%?), because we are not in the 1990s anymore, general purpose APIs are already not involving the CPU/main system extensively hence you have to know what you are doing, not just using it for the sake of using it.

My bad doh.gif I didn't mean claimed I meant speculated.

But I agree 20% performance boost should be minimum, hopefully at least 40-50%.

And Maxwell has an integrated CPU - quite possibly to convert DX->Maxwell language. If that handles DX->Maxwell language well then it could mean Maxwell could compete, without needing optimised games, with Mantle. Pure speculation of course, and of course the integrated CPU won't be free...

besides the words "ridicule the Titan in BF4" they wrote somewhere (not during the presentation) I don't think so.

I guess that's up for interpretation, 20% wouldn't exactly fall under the category of "ridicule". The 780 is about 20% - 30% faster ( let's not debate that ) than the 7970, and I wouldn't consider that ridicule. At least 50% faster is "ridicule" territory.

i wish it would "ridicule" the titan in benchmarks, not just one game using their own API lol, let alone one game ill never play frown.gif

I would agree that, absolutely, it will need to be 50% faster to "ridicule" the Titan's performance. But I would also say that if it hits 30% better on a smaller die at 70% of the price with free games that is also "ridicule" territory.

yeah it was an interview to maximum pc. here is the article

http://www.maximumpc.com/amd_r9_290x_will_be_much_faster_titan_battlefield_4

According to Nekechuck, even though the R9 290X uses a 438 square mm die, which is significantly smaller than the Titan’s 550 sq. mm GK110 offering, it “will definitely compete with the GTX 780 and Titan.” When we asked what this means in real-world terms, he stated, “with Battlefield 4 running with Mantle (AMD’s new graphics API), the card will be able to ‘ridicule’ the Titan in terms of performance.”

When we asked him what he meant by “ridicule,” he simply stated that it will run Battlefield 4 “much faster than the Titan.” Again, this is provided that you run the game using AMD's Mantle API, which is set to launch in December.
