Need more storage bays for HTPC... suggestions?

Thread Starter
I already have 2x3GB HDDs and a 64GB SSD boot drive inside my mATX HTPC case. There is no more room for additional drives and I need more space. Should I just buy external drives from here on out and plug them into USB? This will add clutter to the media center storage space. Is there any other way I can make it work without having a bunch of external HDD's side by side? Also, I would be open to purchasing a better mATX HTPC case with PSU if it allows for more than 3 drives and looks decent.

Thanks

You could use a NAS and then hide it out of your view. You could easily add more storage.

(I assume you mean 3TB and not 3GB. tongue.gif

Although a new case it probably your best option.

Yeah I suggest either something like this Synology or maybe a case like GD07 where you can install like 10 disks inside! (thats what I'm doing)

My HTPC only has the SSD. All data is stored elsewhere on the network. Even 1080P HD can stream on a 100 mbit network. I have a HP N40L microserver running windows server 2008 R2, with 4 Samsung 2TB in a RAID 5.

This sounds like a good option. Just wondering, but what happens if you want to add more / bigger HDDs to your HP N40L microserver?

My question would be how much stuff do you need to keep?

I have 1 T dedicated to each TV and movies. I have at least 100 hours of TV I have yet to watch, and that grows every week with new shows. Every like 6 months I'll purge out old stuff too. I remember things well, so I don't care to keep lots of movies around I'm not going to watch. Also, I have 2 servers. The N40L is a Windows 2008 server and my home built one is running linux. It's my playground and I have shows on there my wife doesn't want to watch, so why put them on the shares she can see. In all I'm not even using 3 T with all those movies and tv combined accross both servers. And this isn't panzey little SD 480P recorded stuff. Almost all the content is 720P.

Basically, I don't feel I need to add another drive for a long time. As long as I keep my 1 T quotas on each directory, and clean up I doubt I'll upgrade until 720 is dull and I need to have at least 1080. However I don't see that being an issue for years.
