Help connecting Monitor to PC?

Hello forum members,
I'm having trouble deciding which cable to purchase in order to receive a picture from my PC.

I've already made the mistake of buying this cable:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004C9P9TM/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i01?ie=UTF8&psc=1
...and learned after receiving it and plugging it in that the cable can only receive signal from the displayport end of the cable, not the hdmi end.

I'm currently using the DVI port on my monitor for my ps3.
VGA provides too fuzzy of an image to take advantage of the HD resolutions being outputted by my graphics card (tried this using a VGA to DVI cable).

What should I buy? I'm confused on all of these terms on passive and active displayport cables, and the seemingly endless choices on every variation of displayport adapters to DVI, mini displayport, etc.

Here's what I'm running:
A Dell UltraSharp U2311H
An AMD 7870 that has: two mini displayports, one Hdmi port, and two DVI ports.

Thanks for your help guys!

Edit: sorry if I didn't make this clear but I'm only connecting ONE monitor. And I can't use the DVI port on my monitor because it's being used by the PS3.

conventional wisdom AFAIK remains that unless you have a displayport compatible monitor it is easiest to pretend they don't exist. Apple sells a dongle that coverts thunderbolt to dvi, but they;re not cheap. How many monitors are you trying to hook up?

if it;s just one and it has dvi or hdmi it's kind of a no brainer. hdmi if you need a longer cable, dvi if you don't. IIRC making a 7870 drive more than three monitors is kind of a stretch if you want to game anyway. The only reason to worry about the displayports is if you need 5 monitors.

Update: I looked up your monitor, It does have dvi d,
Why can't use the cable you already have. it's a 1080p monitor which dvi can handle fine. just plug the displayport into your card and the dvi into the monitor.
