Just Switched Teams to an ATI Card - SO disappointed - ATI guys I need HELP!

Thread Starter
SO for the first time in almost 8 years I decided to go with an ATI card to replace my aging Nvidia Geforce 6800Extreme.
Based upon favorable Tom's Hardware reviews (and lots of other research) I decided the best $200 card out there right now is the X1950Pro.

Thus, I purchased a Powercolor X1950 Pro Ultra running at 600mhz core/1400 mhz memory.

So I installed it tonight.

THESE ARE MY PROBLEMS

1) I have a fairly old 20inch widescreen display from Acer that has a very odd native resolution (1600x1000) versus today's standard 1680 x 1050. The old Nvidia driver I had let me customize and force resolutions - so I was able to get 1600x1000 with ease.

THE ATI DRIVERS WILL ONLY ALLOW ME TO USE THE RESOLUTIONS IT DETECTS - so it's limiting me to a freaking 1280x800 (unless I want to do a scaled 1600x1200 with stretch....ewwww).

HOW THE HELL DO I SET A CUSTOM resolution with ATI's drivers?

2) In response, I tried downloading 2 other 3rd party custom drivers that claimed to offer this type of option. Both drivers failed to install correctly and wreaked havoc on my system. So I went back to ATI's driver.

3) So, for kicks, I decided to start benchmarking on 1280x800. My 3dMark06 went from ~1900 to ~5000. NOT BAD. So now it's time to overclock. My stock clocks are exactly 594/697. So I start using ATI CATALYST. I nudge up the processor to 600 (Where it's supposed to be stock ) and I try running 3dmark. First artifacts, then the whole system crashes.

Now I've overclocked quite a few computer components in my day - I've NEVER seen any stock hardware running THAT close to the edge. So I figure it must be a freak accident. I restart everything and this time try ticking the memory from 697 to 702. Run 3dmark. Same result. Now CATALYST won't even let me overclock anything - when I click "apply" it just reverts me back to stock.

So I figure "Screw Catalyst" and I uninstall it. I then install Riva Tuner. I crank up the processor speed to around 640MHz and memory to around 725. It passes all the Rivatuner tests with flying colors. I restart to load on the overclocked speeds. It boots just fine. Then I try running 3dmark.

The screen HANGS and HANGS and HANGS.

So 2 hours later, after booting in safe mode, uninstalling every driver and program, and reinstalling the stock driver, Catalyst, etc... the computer finally works again.

So basically my new card works flawlessly until I nudge ANYTHING up even a bit (the odds of the card being THAT CLOSE to the performance envelope are nill at best). Moreover, I have to run my 20" widescreen monitor at a fuzzy 1280x800. And finally, It takes forever to boot up the damn ATI utility program when my computer boots.

How can I fix all this? What's my problem?

I should have just spent the $200 on a 7900GS

well the x1950pro is a stellar card but the drivers are rough. i believe ati tray tools has multi res which may allow you to set the resolution. as for the drivers it seems that the ones that came on the disc are often the best option. many people cant even run these cards as they are very problematic. i only buy ati myself but i would say RMA it and try an x1900gt or go with the 7900gs which really is a good deal as well.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814102022 $150

ps. x1900gt performance isnt too far off the x1950 pro, 7900gs is right in there as well.

I thought I read somewhere on this forum that that card pretty much doesn't overclock. At least I think it was that card...

What mobo you got and what bios options are in it?

You need to click on USER CP atop the page and enter your RIG PROFILE,
SIGNATURE, etc.....

THanks for the all the replies guys.

I've been poking around the forum a bit and it seems others have been unable to get much overclocking out of their 1950Pros. However, they've gotten some, I can't get any. I think it's a bit strange (i.e. the hardware isn't maxing out - there is a software problem).

MY BIGGEST PROBLEM is the fact that I can't set a custom resolution. I will not spend another $300 on a monitor. I NEED to somehow set this thing to 1600x1000 despite the fact that it is not a recognized resolution (trust me, though, my crazy monitor needs 1600x1000).

On the Nvidia driver you could literally type in any resolution you wanted (I actually ran 160x100 once for kicks and it worked). Why does the ATI driver limit you to what it detects as your monitor? There HAS to be a way around this - I can't believe that with all the nutty TVs and and irregular LCD screens people use nowadays that no one has attempted to set a custom resolution.

Anyway, thanks guys.

Use the latest ATI driver (full support for the x1950 cards was only added recently). You can't really OC the card because the chip is pretty much already pushed a lot by default and there are really no OC tools out that fully support these cards. All I can recommend is changing the stock cooler (or just replacing the thermal paste with AS5) and use the latest official drivers.

I appreciate that - but as I said, I am most concerned about the resolution.

How does one set a custom resolution?
