Just Switched Teams to an ATI Card - SO disappointed - ATI guys I need HELP! - Page 2

I don't have my machine with my old 9800 near by so I can't remember exactly how the CCC is laid out:
Open the Catalyst Control Center. Look for Monitor Properties and then select Attributes. There should be a checked box that says something about using the monitor's default resolutions or something similar; uncheck it and now enter a costume resolution and refresh rate in the boxes below.

I tried this - but no "boxes" opened up below.

That said, I just found out about this program "powerstrip" that's sole purpose in life in forcing custom resolutions on video cards.

Tomorrow I'm going to screw with it.

I'm not giving up on this card yet!

OH, I just found an article reviewing my (POwercolor) brand of card. It turns out it is fairly overclocked stock and even the guys at Elitebastards couldnt' overclock it. So that's normal there...

HOORAY!

I was able to "force" my video driver to accept 1600x1000 by using powerstrip. It's a wonderful program.

So my last real question then becomes:

Is there anyway I dont' have to endure that 6 - 12 second pause when booting my computer up as the ATI tool loads?

That's the CCC loading up at startup. You can tell it not to load with Windows or disable it altogether (the best option). Let me see if I can dig up old treads showing how to do it.

You can try this little tweak Fishie36 showed me a while back:

1) Hit Start -> Run. Type msconfig -> enter.

3) Hit Start -> Run. Type services.msc -> enter.

4) Find the ATI hotkey poller and disable it (Note: This will disable 3D clocks on Raden X1K series cards)

5) Now reboot and you will have four to five less running process in task manager and the drivers will still be fully functional (including the controll center)
You will need to use other programs to OC (no Overdrive).

Uninstall those stupid CCC drivers and get the Warcat 6.12's. Do a custom install and uncheck the horrific CCC but then check the driver and WDM. After you install that get the latest ATi Tray Tools install this program will do all the same CCC will but takes up less resources. The overclocking within this software will also work I personally use it with my Pro. Any other questions just ask. The Warcat drivers are in the ATi Overclocking and Driver section.

Also the Pro is leagues ahead of the GT and beats the GS in all benchmarks besides OpenGL.

I had the same types of experience when switching to ATi its a new type of software to use and a new card its just different once you get it you will like the superior image quality ATi gives. After you get ATi Tray Tools figured out we will enable EATM and AlphaSharpening.

Thanks for the reply.

I'm new to the ATI jargon - what the hell is a "CCC" driver?

I tried both the Omega and another hacked driver and neither worked. I'm really hesitant to tray yet another 3rd party driver.

CCC is ATI's Catalyst Control Center
Trust us on this, CCC is a waste of your time. Use warcat with ATI tray tools. Some people even claim better image quality from some of the third party drivers but I haven't noticed that. There are actually several really good 3rd party drivers, warcat and omega being the first two that come to mind immediatley, but I'm not sure if Omega supports the x1950pro yet. But ya uninstall your stock drivers and tools cause CCC is a resource hog for what it does, and catalyst drivers are a roll of the dice as to the quality each month in my expierience.

I trust you guys. Below is what I'm going to do. PLEASE TELL ME if any of it is incorrect:

1) UnInstall ALL ATI software, including drivers and CC
2) Install Warcat Drivers
3) Insert the ATI CD that came with my card and install ONLY the tray tools (no driver or CCC)
4) Install ATItool in one last attempt at overclocking.

Is this correct?

Thanks guys!
