What x79 board to buy?

Thread Starter
Gonna build a new setup, using water cooling and a 3930k cpu. Former owner OC'd it to 4.7 GHz and that is my absolute goal to beat.
Rather not spend to much money on a motherboard, but it is important it overclocks very well. Would also need to handle crossfire and SLI.
If there is full cover water block for that board to buy it would be a bonus.

So what board to get?

RIVE? Sabertooth? P9X79 Pro? AsRock? Gigabyte?

I would go with the Asus X79 Deluxe, great options, great for overclocking lots of PCI-E 3.0 slots all around amazing board.

The RIVE is the most proven X79 board for overclocking and the one you'd need to choose if looking for a full cover water block.
For 4.7-4.8GHz under water P9X79 WS is a compelling option if you can't justify the extra 50 dollars to get an RIVE.

I used to have one, and probably would have kept it despite having another board I was using if it's layout was more suited to air cooling. it's nearly ideal for a WC setup, however.

Very similar BIOS and capabilities as the RIVE, and more than any of the non ROG ASUS boards. It is missing a few things however, and does not have quite as robust a power delivery system. Still, without sub-ambient cooling, it's unlikely that these will be serious limiting factors.

Memory OCing is up there with the very best LGA-2011 boards.

+1 for the Asus X79 RIVE or the Asus X79 Deluxe as an alternative option.

For a 'Budget' board try the newer Gigabyte GA-X79-UD3 Rev 1.1..................... I just got one to pair with an i7 4820K and it already had the latest F16 Bios and booted up instantly.

I was checking this thread as I'm also interested in an X79 board and saw your post, I checked amazon and newegg and couldn't get a match for Rev 1.1. Do you know where the Rev 1.1 can be purchased?
