Using a capture card to play console games inside a Windows environment

Thread Starter
Long story short, I'm thinking of getting a capture card, so I can play my Xbox 360 on the preview screen, inside Windows.

I'm specifically looking at the AVerMedia Live Gamer HD C985.

I've read a lot about input lag on the preview window, but I'm not sure how true it is for this card.

It's been a long time since I've done this, I used to play original XBOX through a TV tuner card, and don't remember any perceivable lag.

Anyone use a setup like this?
Is there (much) input lag?
And ideally, does anyone have experience with the C985?

Thanks.

I have a Haupage HDPVR and there is alot of lag. Its about 2 seconds. I don't think it would be a good idea to do.

The Avermedia is a good card, but also take a look at the Hauppauge HD PVR2 Gaming Edition. It's an external capture device (about the same price as the Avermedia card) and is used by tons of streamers and youtubers. Just another option to look at.

EDIT: As stated above there are still some lag issues, But some can be fixed, just do some heavy research before buying anything, know what problems can arise with each device.

That one uses a USB 2 connection, though. I wonder if a PCIe interface would alleviate the input lag.

If you are wanting to use a monitor for your consoles... this will allow you to do so. In any case, there is considerable input lag because you computer has to read the input feed, then render it into the window. The lowest input lag I've seen is with my turd Dazzle... only like .5 seconds, but it runs at 480i - a lot less data to render

Oh, and please note that the the consoles only run at a resolution of 720p or lower, at a 4:3 ratio. On a 16:9 1080p display, it is upscaled, cropped, and stretched.

Thanks for the info, guys.

Guess I may have to go back to my initial plan.

Here's the issue; I bought a 360 for GTA V and a couple of other games. MS, in all their wisdom, removed the optical out from the latest "E" version of the console.

So unless I want stereo audio from 360 E to Z-5500, I need some extra component.

I thought a capture card would be a nice tidy way of doing things, but I think I'll just go back to looking into HDMI to HDMI + optical splitter.

Anyone know of any good ones on the market?

Turtle beach are apparently releasing one, because some of their headsets use optical.

I don't know if it makes a real difference or not (I cannot tell FWIW). I take the L&R audio outputs from the xbox convert them to a stereo 1/8" and plug them into my input jack on the PC and listen through my PC which has the astro a40 plugged in. I don't know what the newer xbox's have in terms of component out though.
