now i'm really looking forward to it since Nvidia are trying their best to lower the expectations from the new consoles and uplifting the PC's future

2014 needs to be here right now

can you imagine the rivalry in getting the best linux drivers now? Nvidia already have a huge head start over AMD as their linux driver is 99% the same as the Windows 8 version they just need to keep up on patches and bugs like anything else.. then again AMD have mantle + AMD hardware optimization and the consoles which are going to use OpenGL even on xboxone in most cases for ease of porting.. so nvidia are going to have to claw to survive

it could be a real hotbed of company creativity and fighting here on who can push the best title and graphics

Claw to survive? While Nvidia is working with Valve to streamline their OS, AMD is creating mantle that no one is going to use. Nvidia already has the better Linux support as you said.

Ho-hum...

They'll get in bed with whomever gives them more money. With both, the one that gives them more money and the one that gives them a bit less money. EA is such an unprejudiced hooker. biggrin.gif

Look the Contributors/Promoters table. Promoters are the Board: Nvidia, AMD, Intel, Apple, Samsung, Sony, Qualcomm, etc. Pretty much every name that has something to say in the grand scheme of things. This is going to catch and Microsoft can't do crap about it. thumb.gif

Your name is aptly chosen. I can see through it biggrin.gif

While Nvidia is awesome, AMD is crap...right? rolleyes.gif

Working with hardware vendors

We’ve been working with NVIDIA, AMD, and Intel to improve graphic driver performance on Linux. They have all been great to work with and have been very committed to having engineers on-site working with our engineers, carefully analyzing the data we see. We have had very rapid turnaround on any bugs we find and it has been invaluable to have people who understand the game, the renderer, the driver, and the hardware working alongside us when attacking these performance issues.
This is a great example of the benefits that are the result of close coordination between software and hardware developers and should provide value to the Linux community at large.

This comes directly from Valve. A year ago.

since Nvidia jumped on the linux support for steam 1st i wouldn't say they need to claw

they just need something similar to Mantle or buy the licenses to use it

Oh I'll admit I'm heavily Biased towards nvidia. AMD is one of those companies where I've had enough bad experiences to decide to boycott their whole operation. I'd like to see AMD fix their Linux drivers first before creating an API that only a very small amount of developers are going to use. I see openGL becoming the standard since it is supported by every platform including mobile.

The pros and cons of SteamOS
Quote:
By announcing SteamOS yesterday, Valve declared that PC gaming is more than desktop gaming, that Windows is not our master, and that—finally—cats can own Steam accounts. The free, Linux-based, cat-friendly operating system is designed for gaming on living room PCs, because PC gaming according to Valve isn’t about WASD and DirectX—it’s about openness and collaboration.

Pretty good read I'd say.

The thing about SteamOS is that I'm pretty sure it won't be required for anything really.

Now if EA decided to make OriginOS (and lets pray to gaben up above that they won't) they will probably make it mandatory for all their new stuff.

Did you what? Did you just compared Steam to Origin?

You're honest and have the balls to admit it, and for that I can respect you. Think of Mantle as a new shiny toy to play with. Nvidia and Intel are about to release other shiny new toys. If you don't have brand bias(like me and many others) your toy range is bigger. More toys=loads of fun. biggrin.gif
