How can I recover hiden files on a harddrive?

Hi there guys and gals,

I'm trying to recover data from a hard drive for a friend of mine. I've personally never had any issues losing data to viruses on any device so I have no idea what to do to recover it.

Here's the situation. The data on the hard drive is very important and must be saved somehow. When the hard drive is plugged in it shows up empty, yet Windows (7) says that 15GB are full. According to my friend, that is the amount that his files occupied. So I am guessing that the files are there but are hidden somehow. Also we know that this is due to some sort of virus. Since this happened initially the virus has spread to other computers in the household. In any case that is beside the point.

The question is, how can I recover the data without losing it? What tools/software do I need to try and recover it? The computer where the virus originated was wiped and had windows reinstalled, so the virus should no longer be a problem. The problem is recovering the data without risking losing it. How should I got about that?

All suggestions/recommendations are appreciated smile.gif

Thanks smile.gif

You can go to a command prompt and do a DIR /AH and it will show the hidden files. The 15GB might well be a pagefile.sys or lost space consumed during NTFS formatting.

IF you find hidden folders or files and want to un-hide them, you can type ATTRIB -h *.* and it will unhide everything in the current folder.

Try "Recover My Files". Very handy software for data recovery.
Used it a few times in work myself and it did the job. Even if the drive wasn't recognized by the OS. thumb.gif
