MTU tweak for P2P gaming

Thread Starter
Hi guys couple quick questions about MTU tweak for p2p gaming, any info will be appreciated.

1. Does the MTU set affect both TCP and UDP?

2. If the host MTU is 1500 and i'm using 1454, does that mean it will force host PC to send each packet in 2 pieces to me?

3. How does the modem router MTU and Windows registry MTU can affect each other?

Thanks very much.

MTU is max transmission unit, that is important to know. It means that the device will only accept packets up to that size, anything larger is dropped. p2p games are going to use many smaller packets, and none of them should come anywhere close to even half of the default mtu. To be honest its just best to leave the mtu at 1500 or 1508 depending on what the device considers a packet, some add parts of the header others don't.

The only time that the mtu should be changed is if you have a very specific reason, like getting every little last drop of switching power out of a switch. You don't need to do that unless your switch is operating at 100% and the stuff its switching is actually using the full mtu.

Forgot to actually answer your questions.
1) I think so
2) if the packet that is received by the device is bigger than the mtu then the packet is dropped. It has nothing happen that device will just forget about it.
3) As 2 says, if the 2 are different and a packet comes along that is larger than the smallest mtu then that packt will be dropped.

MTU will not effect you gamming unless its really really low, and to be fair mesing with it can breaks your internet (to low not stable enough to high ie above 1492 will just casue fragmentation / packets dropped)
