HDTV more fluid than Monitors.

Thread Starter
Last week I bought an LG 42LN5200. I bought it for the sole purpose for my console gaming. Though I was rather curious on how PC looked on it. One thing I noticed instantly was how fluid the games were compared to my monitors I currently use(Samsung P2770HD and Asus VW246H). Had my friend come over the other day to make sure I wasn't crazy and that my eyes weren't playing tricks on me. He also noticed that the TV was much more fluid.

I was just wondering if anyone could explain why this is the case. I was thinking the scaler chips that modern HDTV's have, but I remembered that the scaling chips would also add input lag(the TV doesn't have a game mode that disables all the upsclaing and post processes the chips do). I noticed no noticeable input lag(im extremely sensitive to input lag).

I don't have any plans on moving all my gaming to the TV since how its set-up wont allow for it unless the game had controller support. Also noticed that videos that I made also look better on it as well(this im guessing is due to the scaler chip inside of it).

Your monitors could possibly have more input lag than some HDTVs.

According to this review , the P2770 has an input lag of 1-2 frames , which is high for a TN panel monitor. :

http://www.prad.de/en/monitore/review/2010/review-samsung-p2770hd-part10.html

Part of the reason that videos and games would look better is because the 42LN5200 uses a different panel ( I'm guessing either a VA or IPS type) than your monitors.

IIRC, that line of televisions is actually extremely good regarding input lag, and it uses an IPS panel. AVS Forums has a LOT more information about it, tho.

A lot of HDTV use some sort of smoothing functions where it uses postprocessing to increasing The effective frame by interpolating frames, and also trying to reduce blur by sharpening each frame. Not a bad thing, generally, except that this does introduce additional input lag. For some TVs this can be significant.
That's true, but not always. However, if you see 240hz+, then yes it's going to have a lot of lag from the interpolation. The LG's, however, have a Game Mode (and some a PC mode) that disables all post-processing to cut input lag and the latter mode gives full 0-255 color.

Game mode also takes out the fake 120 Hz processing.

Also you will find that the input lag that still exists after enabling game mode is still higher than some monitors.
