HTPC Case + Motherboard?

Thread Starter
Hello,

I've been wanting to build up an HTPC (gaming) for quite some time, and since I upgraded my main computer, I thought now was a good time to do so. The HTPC rig is as follows so far:

  • i5-2500k (noctua low-profile low-noise HSF)
  • GTX 570
  • 8GB (2x4GB) 1600 mhz RAM
  • 120 GB SSD
  • 300 GB Velociraptor
  • 650 Corsair TX PSU

I'm having problems with my mobo, so I'm looking to buy a new one as well as a case. I figure this would be a good time to go to mATX if I wanted to. I'm looking for advice on an mATX or smaller case that will fit my needs, as well as a new mobo. I have a wired gigabit connection. An optical drive is not needed for day to day. I want to use this as a streaming machine, not for dvd's or blu-ray. I have a PS3 for that.

Uses:

  • Stream HD quality videos from my NAS
  • Play most games at 1080p with decent quality (super high quality not needed, I have a GTX 780 to handle that on my new system)

I will be using This as a wireless keyboard/mouse to control it. As well as a wireless xbox controller.

Case is subjective but everytime I think about HTPC case (so it matches other home theater equipment like receivers) the Silverstone GD07 comes to my head (uber biased because i just love it). I'm about to buy one, a second plus about it is it can hold 10 3.5 HDD drives (using 5 1/4 adapters) and in my case, my HTPC is also my file server. Not so sure about what would be your best option for motherboard. I'll buy almost any 1155 asus / gigabyte / asrock.

For a case Silverstone is a great manufacturer of HTPC cases. I'd go with the Silverstone Tek GD05B and for a motherboard I like staying with Asus so I'd recommend the ASUS P8Z77-M. This should give you a nice setup and the 2500K will be a nice CPU to keep that HTPC current for quite a while.

The only problem you may have is fitting your GPU in that case, if you need a larger option then I'd go with the Cooler Master Elite 130 and the ASUS P8Z77-I Deluxe.
