new rig building, ssd for os plus hdds in raid 0

So im in the process of piecing together a new rig, and for the storage portion of it im thinking i want to have a small ssd for the os and have a couple of regular hdds in raid 0 for everthing else. Im not doing anything thats data critical so redundancy is not a must have. I have been searching around and have not found a good guide on how to set this up correctly.

Also would the SSD show up in as drive C for example then my raided hdds show up as D (if thats what i designated it as)? And if i installed all my games to the raid array would it launch from a desktop shortcut or from start menu as if i only had one disc drive?

Sorry for all the newbish questions, the current pc im running on is an athlon 64 fx-60 so its rather ancient.

Thanks!

Honestly, it is very easy to do. biggrin.gif

I have a RAID setup guide and a few other setuip guides as well here: www.overclock.net/t/1227308/storage-essentials-thread

however you choose. The icon will link to where ever the game is located regardless.

Feel free to ask more q's!

I'd say get a 120/128GB SSD for OS and two WD10EZEX's or Seagate 7200.14's for RAID 0. Then as always just get another larger drive for backups.

Thanks for the infor Sean. Have another question, what is the advantage to having your OS on an ssd rather than it and everything else in the raid array?

I know if a drive fails it the raid array is toast and if it gets super corrupted everthing is toast. What is the advantage to having them split like that?

Thanks,

The advantages are that the SSD is literally an order of magnitude faster with the random reads/writes that make up nearly all of the OS activity, tiered storage means that you can access data from different drives/arrays in parallel without overloading them with requests (which causes stuttering and momentary freezing), it's vastly easier to reinstall windows when it's not sharing drives with your data, and I could go on...

Personally, I would never want my only large storage to be a RAID0 array, I would have to have at least one other drive (a larger capacity drive), because one wrong thing means everything goes kaput.

I agree with Sean's recommended setup:
- 256GB 840Pro or M5P-Xtreme
- 2x 1TB WD10EZEX RAID0
- 1x 2-3TB Seagate 7200.14
(and ideally an external USB3.0/eSATA HDD that at least matches the RAID0 array in size but I find 3TB to be about perfect, both in size and in price)

Remember that backingup to just another drive in the same system isn't really backing up at all. You certainly should do so, but you aren't close to truly safe unless you have at least one external backup that is unplugged from the wall and thePC at all times, eexcluding when a backup is actually being performed. Truthfully, a second external drive kept off-site and rotated with theother is the safest method for the average person, as you are almost completely free of data loss, but the risk is always there, minimizing it is key.

Oh, and you should definitely ensure that you have both a quality PSU (ripple is bad for drives!) along witha ggood UPS, if you are running RAID0 without a battery backed hardware controller. The PFC models from Cyberpower are a great choice without spending a ton of money.
