[Solved]Overclocking...FSB Why dont you 250mhz+!

Thread Starter
Yes, I know, I know there are 100 of these.

But, this FSB speed brick wall has been urking me for the longest.

I've as of late tried to overclock my cpu some more, realizing that it wasn't just simply at its limit.
Every time I attempt to raise the FSB to 250mhz there will either be a lock up while in windows, or there will be no post at all.
To find my limiting factor I:
1: Lowered cpu multiplier to x10 and attempted to run at 250mhz FSB with the same issue occuring. - Its not the CPU being at a limit
2: Lowered cpu multiplier and memory frequency divider to run at 250mhz FSB to no avail. - Its not Memory related
3: Simply increased voltage of cpu and lowered HT Link to run and tried to run at 250mhz with no success. - The cpu is indeed being fed enough power.

I cannot even...

What am I doing wrong.

Your RAM can't handle the speed increase.

My memory ran at 200mhz from the default of 400mhz at the time of trying to run Fsb:250mhz.
If It successfully ran at fsb 250 mhz, my memory frequency would still not be high enough to cause instability at that divider.

My Pc will also become unstable at 249mhz fsb and 248, so I am stuck at 247mhz.

This mb is very finicky....

I would say that the ram is the limit. For example my ram is rated to run 1600mhz 9-9-9-24 at 1.5V. Without HTT change it works normal(even at 8-8-8-24). But when I work at 300mhz it needs 1.58V and tRFC at 300ns (110ns stock) to be stable at the same frequency. So bump a tRFC to a 160/300ns and lower the timings a bit.Ram voltage bump would also help a bit.

I would say the ram is holding you back.

My 1600mhz Balistix have a hard time with 250 FSB, even with 1.65v. I drop in my 1600mhz Sammy's and have no problem at 313 FSB @ 2500mhz with 1.65v.

Memory actually was the problem, sorry broseidon. I am known for being stubborn if wrong.
I find it odd though because, I can run this ddr2 at 900mhz with no problem at a fsb of 247. The highest stable clock I've had this memory at was 1057 mhz and it was fine.
However, this morning I decreased speed to 667 mhz and changed fsb to 250 and expected the same thing.

To my surprise, it posted and remained stable, but If I go and change ddr2 speed to 800mhz ( Its default ), there will be no post.

1: 250 MHz FSB, ddr2 800 = no post
2 :250 MHz FSB, ddr2 667 = post
3: 247 MHz FSB, ddr2 1000 = post "why...?"

I suppose to compensate for my much lower memory speed, Ill just run absurdly tight timings like 3-3-3-9, etc.

Ill have some fun with this cpu when I get home though. biggrin.gif
Maybe I can hit 3.6 GHz...

Not sure how your motherboard bios works but check CPU-z memory tab - I think you'll find you're running significantly higher than 667Mhz.
Should be @ 833Mhz by my reckoning.

In cpu-z It would be recognized as about 330mhz, don't quote me on that though because I'm not home and cannot look.

Correct - if it's running at 667.
As I said, I'm not sure how your bios works but your ram speed is directly linked to your FSB and I think that when you set the speed to 667, this would only be 667 with the FSB @ 200.
With FSB @ 250, which is a 25% increase from stock, you should see a 25% increase on ram speed.
Setting the ram speed in your bios simply changes the ram multiplier.

Some boards update to show the actual ram speed with the FSB change, however from the experience you have described, I think that maybe yours doesn't.
