Need Advice

post #1 of 3
Thread Starter
Alright my friends.. I've been reading here and following along; Before I say one other thing I will list what I have and what I see as an issue with my setup... Need some advice;

ASUS Maximus VI FORMULA
4770K Costa Rica B373
H100i
MSI Radeon 7970 TwinFRZR III BE/OC

XSPC 720 Pump/Res Combo
XSPC 7970 Water Block (last gen)
XSPC 120mm Rad (xs i think)

To give a quick Idea:

Output from pump, intake on MoBo, output mobo, intake GPU waterBlock, out to res which is on back of the case as is the fan pulling from inside to out, then back to res again. My temps on Mobo never get above 28-40C under max load on G-card and OCing cpu... G-card temps rarely peek above 48C under 100% load for extended time(1.5hr+) So, those are on their own separate loop, and I have card voltages clocks set following in Afterburner: Core 1.2/1200: Mem 1.550/1430Mhz respectively. My card and all is good; Just gvin Idea what is going on here..

Now.. My temps on 4770K worry me. When I see it hitting 85, I STOP immediately.. I never let it get above that. This is only under extreme loads, this happens. I've even sanded and lapped down the h100i plate to a mirror finish. I am using Arctic mx-4 Thermal paste. Now I get these high temps at 4.6Ghz, @ 1.288Vcore. I am able to run it stable though and I honestly believe I have a 5Ghz chip in my hands.... problem is... No matter which way I move my radiator, fans, or pull off and re-seat the pump on cpu, i can't get temps from above, below 80C. I have seen others do it so I know it's possible. Now, my AMD FX6350 OCd to 4.5Ghz, never got above 40-42 with this setup, bt I know that is an entirely different beast in itself. The funny thing is...If I set my clocks and voltages down to where it gets a tolerable temps, say 75C, doesn't feel like warm air at all comin out of the rad. My ambient temps are always 68-72F; It seems like this chip just shoots up to those temps, and they fall as fast as I click stop... I know Haswell is hell inside of silicon, but Really, under ideal conditions, where is the threshold for h100i? Like is there a temp or range to which the copper block can't transport heat into the liquid? I know the rads/fans could keep up, but I am seeing more and more either ppl not mounting correctly, or for some reason heat dissapation isn't efficient enough to support much higher temps this cpu puts out. No it's not been delidded... but its not out of the question... only thing is.. I plan on eventually probably making another separate custom loop with a larger 240mm Rad on this Haswell. Sitting here typing this out seems to have enlightend myself where the issue lies... It's not the rads or fans... It's either something in mounting, or thermal conductivity of my h100i. Like I said, I could run FX6350 100% 24/7 and never have to worry.. but with this beast.. . whole different story. First time I did it, I couldn't get past 4.4 because of temps. Now, with sanding and polishing and using the ever so slightest amount of compound, or just slobbin' it on, between the two, least amount works best... But I am still can't get it over that threshold.

So my question is: If it's is indeed mounted correctly, and temps are still peaking as they are, is the inability of the thermal conductivity to keep up, bad chip, bad pump or what?

I mean seriously.. I'm not a n00b... but can make n00b mistakes.. I've read pages and pages...talked to this company. that company.... Of course some wont talk much because soon as they know ur OCing, they like..Well blah blah, we cant comment, blah blah.. So I stopped trying to get specs from companies on whatever it may be.. Anyways.. Its just frustrating because I have either one heck of a chip, and my cooler isn't right, or I have one heck of a chip that the devil himself made... I am telling ya it's too hott and I WONT push it. I have been readin all over the place ppl saying 100C is the limit.. Well, Technically, it's 74C when deggradation sets in; Intels' specs on ark.intel.com will tell you that as did an engineer at Intel. SO... Should I kick the H100i over to my AMD Build and get a Raystorm for the Intel, or is it something wrong now with my h100i? I think some part is the TIM Intel uses too.... holding heat back..not letting it escape...

Just some thots and Opinions.. All questions, concerns will be taken seriously; Smart-ass, know-it all comments, will be dealt with swiftly. Here for serious info, not high-school BS.. Leave your attitude at the keyboard please. *Thats my disclaimer, as I've seen quite a few of those types on here and other places*

Are you using an H100i or Custom Loop. Your post is confusing.

OK so you have the h100i on the cpu and the XSPC componants cooling the GPU only,,i think that's what your saying,,,,i can only compare my h100--3570k,,,,at 4.6ghz 63.c max temp running IBT,,or prime 95,,,,,at 4.9ghz I was getting 90.c+,,,thats way to hot,,,all I can say is you've done the lapping,,thats good,,,you may need to delid it,,,,are you running a push/pull on the h100i,,that will help a degree or 2,,,,,you may just have a hot chip,,sorry to say,,,,is the h100i pump rpms steady ,,,,mine fluctuate from 2020rpm to 1965rpm,,,
