ASUS Rampage III Extreme Issue, Help needed - Page 2

I guess that means the Asus manual is wrong. It clearly shows that using slot 1 and 3 gives 16/16. If you go to 3 slots then you get 16/8/8.

I have been doing some reading and the x58 IS capable of doing x16/x16 provided no other slots are used. The PCIe is run off the chipset and it may be that some 1366 boards do not take advantage of it. However, to say that it cannot is incorrect. You may be referring to the 1155 where the PCIe is run off the cpu and is limited to x16/x8.

I am not a computer engineer so I may be wrong. If I am, I will acknowledge my mistake.

Can you point me to the souce that says 1366 is not capable of 16/16?

edit: Added comments re further research.

Firstly, the 1366 chipset will NOT do xfire or SLi and have both slots at x16. It will only support x8 due to the limited PCI-E Lanes.

If you want x16, x16 on both PCI-E slots you have to go with a 2011 chipset. Although the loss of FPS over x8 vs x16 is not really worth it unless you're going tri-sli or tri-xfire.

you could be correct im just going by the specs of the motherboard. even if it turns out to be x16 by x8 it would still be nice to be able to use slot one and three versus one and two. i have to have that spacing for the martrix gtx580's i want to slam in there. i replaced them with r9 280x's in my trooper so i figured i would throw these oldie but goodies in this extra build from parts i had lying around my room. but in the end i may just use one drop down one slot to the two slot and ill figure out what to do with the other matrix gtx580. i hate to have it jut lying around there good gpus, they have done me proper for a long time, and selling them might prove difficult considering there are so many newer gpus out. figure i would just make a mid tower steam box....
