Is it time to SLi my 670 4GB FTW?

Hello all,
It has been quite some time since I have ventured onto OCN. I am not even positive if I still have the most up to date build going in my signature.

Here is my situation:
I use my rig for Gaming @ 5760x1080 on Three 23" Asus monitors.
I just recently updated my drivers to the latest revision due to some serious crashes from trying out a few F2P games
War Thunder
War Frame
Soldier Front 2

On top of that the driver update seems to have botched Start8, it now sits on only 1 of my monitors and is very buggy. It was perfectly fine until I updated the driver. BTW I always run in NV surround mode.

I have a lovely unique issue with TF2. No matter what! The first time I start playing this game between 5-45 minutes the game will lockup completely, and then about 3 seconds later the game comes back, I can shoot, I can hear, but the screen is frozen like a picture.
The only way to get out is bring up task manager and close it out. If I start up the game again, this issue never comes bac, unless I restart my PC.

I have reinstalled TF2, I have reinstalled steam. This still happens. It is really annoying when I want to play Mann Up mode since I will lose my spot on the server I am in.

I am moving next week and figured right after moving in I will completely reinstall my OS in the hopes that the TF2 issue will go away. I also hope to be able to actually play some of the other games I mentioned without having mysterious crashes to desktop.

My wife plays games with me. She said if you are going to reinstall you might as well upgrade your PC now too, so you won;t have to reinstall again. "Let's go to Micro center"

^ I am aware of how lucky I am. -_-

So I took my first venture to MC. It is about an hour and a half drive, thus the reason I have never gone before.

I picked up a 4770k, a 2nd Samsung 840 pro, 8GB of RAM, and a Gigabyte UD4h.

I plan on reinstalling with 2 of the 840s in Raid 0. The M4 and Intel SSDs as reserve, and of course my 1TB for all the important data.

I have been great up until this point.

My main question is will I see a benefit in games like Metro, Skyrim, Natural Selection 2, and BF3 if I drop the $300 on another GTX 670 4GB FTW to SLi?

I know that the 670 will never be powerful enough to fully utilize 4GB of VRAM, but would it be a worthwhile purchase? Or should I just hold out on my single 670 until the 800 series is released?

Thank you in advance,

Really you could do both. Buy the second 670 and when you feel like upgrading sell them off(you will lose money but that seems like a fairly good deal for a 670 considering you have one already)

Anyways that's what I would do smile.gif

I recall reading a debate about the 4GB cards and that you require SLI to be able to use the full 4GB.
SLI provides the GPU power for the cards to use 4 GB.

Will you see a benefit running SLI with those games?
Yes.

I just bought Asus DC2 670 4gb off ebay to pair with my evga 4gb 670. Got a really good deal on it. $273, seller told me it was brand new. Came with all the factory protection stickers on it so I'll take his word for it. Anyway, yes you will see a huge improvement in those games you listed. I know I did. Close to double the performance. I was a little skeptical going SLI since I hear people talking about stuttering issues and screen tearing. But honestly, I can't tell the difference in fluidity compared to single card. Feels smoother now since I'm getting highly frame rates. I am running a 120hz monitor though so screen tearing was never a issue.

The price of the Zotac GTX 670 4GB is low enough that I would recommend getting another.

Update:
I ended up getting a second EVGA GTX 670 FTW 4GB Card.
I have windows 8 fresh installed, but I have yet to get any games installed at this point.

I will add another update to see if some of my issues have gone away.

It would appear that the issue of my Start8/Taskbar going to the center screen in nvidia surround is actually a driver issue. I was assuming it was my rig taking a final crack at my dignity. However, with a fresh install my start button and bar are now only on my middle monitor. Which in some peoples minds might make more sense then having it on the left screen and stretching across all three displays. It is a little wonky though, since the start button now hangs over the actually bar sometimes.

Way to Go nvidia!
