Need a new chair that'll last!

Title says it.

I need a new chair, Im 230lbs, 6ft and I spend around 6hrs/day in my chair at night.

I'm currently using a very uncomfortable plastic lawn chair because I've had to get rid of 90% of my furniture because of bed bugs a friend of mine gave without mentioning he had them whatsoever, until after the fact. mad.gif Regardless, they are finally gone so I think its time I go to a real chair. tongue.gif

Im a fairly big guy so I need something that is going to be sturdy, and last for years. not some chair that's 80% plastic and will break in 6 months.
I'd like it to be height adjustable, reclining optional but I would like a full back on the chair for my back. tongue.gif

my max I can afford is $200, I know it isn't much for what I need but its all I got considering I still have to get a bed. stun.gif

Ive been looking around and found a few chairs that might be worth getting but OCN hasn't let me down yet, maybe you guys know of some reliable chairs within my price range? wubsmiley.gif

There have been quite a few Humanscale Freedom chairs second hand on Ebay lately which I would thoroughly recommend. (I used them at work for 9 hours a day and figured one would be perfect for my gaming chair at home - so I bought one and it is as good as I had hoped)! You may have to follow a few auctions to get one under $200 though.

I did some office chair shopping and research lately, and while I don;t have a specific model for you, I can tell you some things to look for:

One thing I discovered is that chairs are weight rated. The rating isn't published often, but the sales people will know.
For example IIRC there is only one chair offered at staples that is weight rated for 300lb or more. Remember, if you like to sit down suddenly, you will momentarily weigh a lot more. So if you want a chair you can ust flop into you need a weight rating a good bit higher than your actual weight.

Used office furniture places are good places to get deals. Companies often buy very high quality stuff, then dump it after 2 years when the decorator comes by. This is especially useful if you don't care about color.

Also avoid "bonded leather" if at all possible. The stuff is actually vinyl with leather scraps, or sometimes even just dust, cast into it to make it technically"leather" it wears even more poorly than vinyl.

Plastic isn;t as bad as one would think, as long as it's good quality plastic. Arm rests don't need to be that strong for example, and if you pay attention to weight rating plastic legs may hold up well too.

Hope that helps.

thanks for the info, I looked a little at the humanscale chairs and it looks like I'd break one of those fairly quick, haha.

I was also looking and I think I might try this.

A friend of my scraps a lot so I don't doubt he could find me a decent car chair for free or dirt cheap, get a cheap 20$ wallmart chair for the base, and mount the wheel setup on it.

it looks like a lot cheaper method, and heck, most car chairs are made sturdy enough to handle car wrecks, I think one will hold my fat butt tongue.gif

still looking for one rated at least 250 for 5+ hrs. If I can find a good chair Ill try to wait for black friday and hope there is a deal.

You'd think wallmart would sell chairs with a high weight rating *cough* Just remember there's a reason 4 legged rolling chairs are illegal. They have a nasty habit of flipping over backwards and killing the user.

You shouldnt break a Humanscale Freedom it is rated to 300 pounds and for people up to 6ft 4ins tall (you qualify on both counts). They can be picked up for reasonable prices on Ebay secondhand as i said and normally retail at over £1200 new.
