[SOLVED] i7 4770k not OCd at 100 degrees celsius?! - Page 7

ok thanks, I JUST got an offer from the company to RMA it!!!!

I think I will go for it, what do you think, am I likely to get a cooler one?
from what I can gather, I got a slightly-hotter-than-usual-CPU

I'd go for that RMA (provided it won't cost you a lot of money) and test my luck. You might get a cooler chip, you never know! biggrin.gif

So, you reckon the chip could still be very suitable for OCing, despite being somewhat of a hothead?
I thought those two were directly related?

Here is some proof as to why I think your CPU isn't bad....This actually seems to show it's much better than mine.

Heres a chart showing that my cooler keeps a CPU roughly 10 degrees colder than your cooler :

http://www.overclock.net/t/1322094/lightbox/post/18495592/id/1359274

I have an H100i, you have a Thermalright Macho.

Heres my max temp for my 4770K at stock settings (delidded) : 63C.

So, my cooler should keep my CPU ~10C cooler than yours. My delid should take me ~20C further below you. Yet I am only 10C cooler.

This means my 4770K may have been running 20C hotter than yours before I delidded.

Yet, after my delid, I was able to get 4.7Ghz stable (though, I technically hit the temp barrier before that). It still leaves me in the top 40% of 4770Ks.

Assuming my delid took 20C off my CPU temp, and your delid would take 20C off of your temps, you have a pretty good chip!

ok thanks Im gonna look into it in my break
edit:
If your was 20C hotter than mine, it would have been running at 93C on a decent air cooler ........ :O
wow, well Im going to try and OC over the weekend and see what I can get!

sure, checked the bios before I went out and got this:
VCORE = 1.118V
VRIN = 1.752V
VAXG = 0.012V
PCH CORE 1.090V

My initial OC results.

Stable
http://abload.de/image.php?img=ocstable3cy8h.jpg

All attempts (for reference)
http://abload.de/image.php?img=ocall08zwg.jpg

4.5GHz Prime95
http://abload.de/image.php?img=45-1.325vprime95nkeyf.jpg

4.6GHz Prime95
http://abload.de/image.php?img=test19prime95apf94.jpg

At 4.6GHz it gets a bit too hot for my liking hitting like 93C with Prime95 (LargeFFTs)after 5mins and also like 91 when rendering with Sony Vegas which is a daily task and can run for hours.

What do you think? I guess its an average CPU from what I've seen people get in terms of GHz/Voltage, however I havent run any tests for more than 5mins...

Seems to be right where my 4770K is.

I looked at your spreadsheet. It seems your overclocking isnt going too well.

Here's how I would do it :

*Disable all power saving features such as C1E, C3, etc.

*Put LLC on maximum

1. Start from stock.

2. Up the multiplier so you're gaining 100mhz.

3. Test IBT (Intel Burn Test) for 15 minutes

If you fail, up the voltage .01v

If you pass, up the multiplier so you gain another 100Mhz.

Repeat step 3 till' 4.4Ghz. Then you must go back to stock and overclock the (Something or other. I forgot. I will report back with the answer later.)

I started again at 4.5GHz/1.22V and upped in 0.01 steps and got it semi-stable at 1.26V!
Prime95 ran only for 20minutes but BF4 and the rest runs fine.
Ran IBT, passed 15 runs at standard, crashed after 30s on Very high.

Edit: I put in the new CPU and oh boy, this one's a keeper.

It's stable ( in my terms ) at 46x / 1.26vCore / 1.15vRing / 1.8VRIN
The old CPU could only do 45x @ 1.26vCore, so that's a big improvement
And the temps are much better!

Let's just hope RMA goes well fingers crossed

I can show you the OC records if you are interested
