Everybody stop the photographed card lacked the CF finger but the one on the slide didn't don't forget the shown system held 3 of those with a CF bridge.
All is fine as it should be.

CFx is over PCIe through xdma with the 290/290x. Photos of fingers on these cards are from es samples. There is plenty of sources with this information.

Hmm, I can predict what's gonna happen.

Some random site's owner will see this info from OCN and post it like it's confirmed, then people will post that onto OCN as a confirmed article.

Shhhh, don't give them even more idea.

It would be put out through your normal sound card. This is just a way to add programmable "Sound Shaders".

Instead of "is it left or right", you would get "Well if you're at the X, Y, Z cord of 0,0,0, and the sound comes from 0,0,10, and that's through a brick wall, muffle it like this, and account for distance"

This would then play out whatever sound setup you have, be them headphones or whatever.

The idea is more realistic sound by adding sound to the 3d "virtual world" that you render visually anyway.

None of the official AMD slides have the 290X with CFX fingers and the official high res pictures don't have them either.

There have been hints that the R9 290X will beat the Titan (as with any speculation you wait for the reviews).
http://www.guru3d.com/news_story/check_this_the_radeon_hd_r9_290x.html
http://hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1782602

If that turns out to be true that the R9 290X can compete with Titan without Mantle then the issue isn't about a R9 290X needing Mantle. It's the lower tier:
7000 series
R7 260X
R9 270X
R9 280X
R9 290
Is what will be the real concern here vs 780/Titan price/performance ratio. If any these cards are anywhere near Titan performance using Mantle in BF4 that would make big news.

Here you can read a bit more about it from AMD
http://www.amd.com/us/press-releases/Pages/amd-radeon-r9-2013sept25.aspx?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+amdpressreleases+(Press+Releases)

As you can see Mantle would not be limited to just GPUs but will include APUs as well. So, if you can play BF4 at 1080 using a APU from a laptop at around 60 FPS with some of the eye candy on for BF4 would make for great news... Can't wait to read more about it.

is their any word if xdma requires certain hardware, like the new R7/R9 cards or is it going to be available to 7000 series GCN cards also?

Like will it just be a driver update or what? Seems the 280x isn't much faster than my 7950's and the only thing advantage it might have is this xdma thing since 7xxx will have mantle too.

I hate to bring money into this... but people crossfiring 290x/290 are going to be spending a fair amount on an Intel CPU + mobo anyway, right? They're unlikely to give such expensive GPUs anything less. So it really isn't that much of an issue if there are no CFX fingers - and if AMD's next gen CPU can compete with Intel it'll have mobos with PCI3.0 x16

So I don't think many will suffer at all if there were no crossfire fingers.
