New case build

hi everyone,

ok I want to build a pc case from scratch, I was thinking of doing it in wood and adding a side fiberglass pannel to see the components.

I have a couple of questions, doubts, and thoughts, I hope someone can give me some input.

- how to mount the mobo, My guess is that the screws in the wood might come loose with time to the wood "working" because of temperature/humidity changes. So one idea is to make the case horizontal in stead of perpendicular.

-http://i39.tinypic.com/232r88.jpg this is a quick sketch of what I was thinking of it looking like when looking from the back, of course you would only see the fans and psu.

- For the front I thought the same look except with a 120mm fan blowing air in to cool the HDD (i m thinking of throwing them up there with the psu) and it would blow out through the psu keeping a nice airflow. I want to keep them separated from the mobo.

-As you can see the mobo is pretty much in a box inside the case, and the 180mm fans blow just through there. I want to do this so that I have really good air flow, I plan on using a noctuna nh-d14 to cool the cpu.

- The reason that I made a second panel to put the mobo on to is so that I can also have air flowing behind the mobo.

- another thing that Im thinking is, will it possible to make this without having the classic part in the back were you hook up your screen, mouse, keyboard, and monitor showing in the back. I think it should be possible, I was thinking of running all those cables in the space I set up on the for wiring. I will probably have to go with a hdmi cable so that I dont have to drill ahuge hole on the box were I will keep the mobo.

-on the top part of the case in the empty compartmente I want to make it so that i can open it (should be pretty easy) and inside there I want to set up the manual fan control and the usb, headphone, microphone plug in.

- i also want to set up lights inside the pc but those are details. One thing I forgot in the sketch is the fiberglass panel but that is also a detail.

So what do you guys think, is it doable?

Please give me your thoughts good or bad, I just want the most input I can get.

Thanks for taking your time to read this, if you have qustions ask.

Peace

For side panel do you mean acrylic? I haven't heard of any fiberglass that is clear or even very opaque, it would be really cool if there were some though.

For mounting the motherboard I'd recommend cannibalizing and old case or buying a removable tray, they are usually pretty cheap and well worth it since it'd be catastrophic if your mobo dropped off while using your pc. http://www.cmstore-usa.com/haf-xb-motherboard-tray/ . There would be many ways to mount a tray from screws to bolts to epoxies and all will hold well if done correctly. If you use good quality kiln dried lumber and a good sealer as a finish you won't really need to worry about warping, at least for the foreseeable life of the pc.

If the case is large enough you could easily dill a large hole for all your pc connections to the motherboard. Be careful and make sure that there is no stress on any of them though and realize that if you ever want to unplug or plug in something different you will have to open your case up.

Hey,
yeah I ment Acrylic, lol, now that I think about it, what was I thinking?!?! LoL

As for the tray good idea, I have to see if I can get them out here in Switzerland. SOmetime I wish I still lived inb the states, everything is much cheaper and you can get EVERYTHING you could ever dream of, here in Swissland we can get cheese, choccolate etc, but as far as pc stuff we are much more limited. I mean you can probably get everything here too, but with shipping and import tax it will be super expensive.

My idea was to make the side acrylic panel removable(or top, see next post for new idea)

Ok so another idea came up when I saw my daughters small playing table, I thought it would be pretty cool to make it something like a table where you pretty much see everything through the acrylic panel.
I cut out a piece of cardboard and placed some pc components to give an idea of how I was thinking it. new case build 2992k .jpg file
Im stuck on what I want to do, vertical or horizontal.... -_-

what do you guys think?

imput is really apreciated
