[TPU] AMD Announces The Radeon R9 290X - Features 64 ROPs - Page 15

Guys, seriously, settle down with Mantle, they said "900% faster" in a promotional slide and you believed it.

OpenGL and DirectX are already as fast as a card can ever be once you've send a shader and the relevant assets to the card, they have obviously tested it in specialized conditions to make that impressive claim, and that if.

Mildly interested in this Mantle business, kinda worried about the 290X. They show the slide saying it has a firestrike score of 7000, my 770 did that stock and my 780 easily went past 10,000. Since that is the only thing they have "show" for performance I'm wondering what the heck this titan-beating talk is about. Does it only beat everything Nvidia if you're running a game with their new API?

Anything that bring additional 10-20% fps is more than enough reason to use Mantel over DirectX on a top title like BF4.

Lets not forget all EA titles use frostbite 3, so there is quite a lot of title coming to use mantel there alone from just 1 single developer.

i m dubious as my hd7970 matrix does 7800 in fire strike , this would do only 7000-8000 stock ,......, don't think it s that good and sadly not better then overpriced nvidia cards

In any case all those claims require specialized cases, and that if we assumed the claims are even true. A graphics card nowadays, via the nature of the DirectX or OpenGL APIs themselves spends almost all of the time having stuff offloaded to it and NOT communicating with the CPU and that's precisely what their Committees have been doing in the last 20 years, any novice programmer following the OpenGL changelog for example knows that, it's offload, offload, and more offload.

HOLY UNICORN PORN! That's it, I'm selling my kidney for this thing...
On a more serious note, if the benches are gonna be as good as they're saying and the price is low things on the market are gonna get interesting...

now, on to how the r9 290x overclocks and its maximum overclock potential in benchmarks, now thats something im interested in, my titans need a bit of competition, my 7970s and 780s just dont compare devil.gif

also, thinking the titan will EOL at $1k usd aswell since nvidia will probably gouge it to the very end, then drop the 780s price to compete with 290x lol
TITAN will highly likely to go EOL. 290X is already over 250w TDP limit. So Nvidia is more than likely to release GTX785/790 to retaliate, may be 2688 @ 1GHz @ 7Ghz memory, >250w TDP. it is not hard for Nvidia as they already a few months after TITAN release, GK110 now would probably have better binned than TITAN by now.

however if mantel are providing serious performance bump to AMD, Nvidia will really need work really hard to overcome this gap with a much more superior hardware. The same thing how they did with Geforce 2 GTS vs 3dfx Voodoo 5 on glide.

Honestly I am looking for just 10-20% performance bump at best for mantel. It won be a super bump. not 100% lol:rolleyes:

I am just glad I pick 7790 over Nvidia's GTX650Ti.biggrin.gif

the slides were showing ~8000 actually. And around 17% faster than that refreshed 1070MHz 7970GHz that they now call R9 280X...

A stock 7970 isn't very far off from a stock GTX780... if you think an improved GCN architecture with ~2800 cores, 44 ROPs and a 512bit bus won't demolish a stock 780 then i have bad news for you. If the rumored specs are legitimate this thing will run over stock GK110 offerings including the titan, the only thing that remains to be seen is how well they overclock because i'm sure the power draw will be huge much higher than GK110 that's for sure.

Everyone needs to stop with calling each other fanboys. I never have and never will be a fanboy. I like Price/Performance and will always go the way for best bang for my buck. I'm just sick of the high prices. I can easily afford them but I simply just refuse to pay them.
