That's my hope. I could live with $499.

Rumor has it that 290X will retail at 699$... The guy who made this claim is usually well informed so i kind of trust him. If that's the case lots of people are going to be disappointed.

But what will the actual consumer price be? AMD really need to drive sales of GCN based cards (hence the 7950 price drop) so devs will see it is worth the time to use Mantle, and they certainly won't manage that at $700.

By the way - does Mantle require an AMD cpu? Becuase if this does reduce CPU overheads massively then suddenly the 4770K becomes extremely under-utilised for gaming... and the 8350 becomes the sensible choice.

While it is fixed(on single screens dx10/11) it is still not quite to nvidia's levels. There is still more variation in most games, however not enough to likely be perceivable to the vast majority of people.

See at the very right side of above slide (courtesy of Chiploco), it's clearly written "3DMARK (R) FIRESTRIKE PERFORMANCE*".

it does seem that the 280X is an equivalent of the 7970GHz. here is my 7950 oc'ed to 7970 GHz speed . . .

AMD consumers want a low price - well it's their Mantra...

AMD stockholders however look at the GTX Titan which sold way beyond Nvidia's expectations...make no mistake they want a competitive price for the performance.

Who wins this argument on where it should be priced?

$600 - Stockholders see it as a loss, and giving the cards away losing $300+ per card sold. AMD fans rejoice...if performance is as expected. Nvidia guys say meh. Boards implode over OC bench's.
$700 - Stockholders grumble still... AMD consumers will insist on 3 - 5 Launch Title games at this price....to save face.
$800 - Stockholders may be happy if numbers sold is the required amount for profit. - AMD consumers will have to eat crow. Nvidia fans might not be able to contain themselves regardless.

And as of right now we have no concrete info to go on.... redface.gif

i am an amd consumer, yes. i like the low price but last march i seriously considered the 670 over the 7970, however . . .
