Need advice - upgrading from Ati Radeon 4870x2 - Page 2

Thanks! That's a relief!

When i ordered the pc, they had to change the case to a more expensive one as this card would not fit. It was nice of them to upgrade the case for free. That was because it was an error on their part to have included the incompatible options on their website.

I sold both my 7990's this morning so I can grab 290x cards as soon as they become available xD
For now I am stuck with a single 7970 matrix and a gtx670 in my other rig lol

So hold on thumb.gif

you sold 2 x 7990's for 2 x R9 290X's ? you do realize that you will be looking at lower frame rates ?

update:

Used driver sweeper. Installed amd driver . Everything went well until reboot. Artifacts on login screen followed by thick, parallel horizontal bars on the screen for a few seconds.

And then the computer rebooted - or at least tried to.

we are back to the out of range error message now.

Time to wait for the prices to drop I think.

Hmm , Funny thing this, after reinstalling the drivers, while I was waiting for the machine to reboot, I was kind of hoping I would have an excuse to upgrade. That said, I could not consider cancelling my pre-order for the said console. So, if reflowing is something i might be able to do on my own, I might give it a try. Do I google/search the forum, or are there any guides for me?

Thank you in advance.

PS: I am not an IT person. I survive in this techy world going though forums such as these. There is one forum related to my profession that I really respect and admire. Mostly due to the helpfulness of the people, and the generally high levels of netiquette observed in that forum. I've been following this forum intermittently for some weeks. Reading most threads and now, especially after starting this thread on a relatively boring topic, I must say I am very touched by the ready responses, and the overall helpfulness of this forum. You lot are clearly passionate about what you do, and it's a pleasure being part of this forum.

you can get a 7870 for around $170 which would out perform your 4870x2 and also use about half the power doing so if you dont think you need more performance then what you already have then thats the card to get and also way below your budget smile.gif

Yes, a new card seems to be the way forward. I'll watch the prices for a while. Will update accordingly!
