The prices for the 7950, 7970 cards are dropping - camelcamelcamel uk price watch graphs are very promising. I will upgrade. I might get a few quids trying to sell this card on ebay. In the meantime I'll run the machine without any drivers, for occassional desktop work.

Not sure. I'm following advice and will wait for some time, hoping that the prices for the AMD HD 7970 drops. IT's been dropping steadily as per 'camel camel camel uk' and some of those cards are well within my range. When I started this thread I was more interested in Nvidea, as I have not had an easy ride with AMD, but that view is changing.

Even in 2009 when I had this machine built, I would have gone for the latest cards. THis time I can manage with a slightly older one as I believe the older ones will be enough for my needs.

I'm hoping to buy in Dec, but the price drops might tempt me to go for something sooner.

Hi

Sorry to bring up an old thread.

I'm still hoping to get a second hand hd 7970. But the ebay prices for a second hand hd7970 are very close to the prices for r9 280x cards.

Thing is, amazon uk has almost identical prices for
- Sapphire Dual-X AMD Radeon R9 280X OC 3GB GDDR5
- Sapphire AMD R9 280X 3GB 384 Bit GDDR5 OC Full Retail Pci-E Graphics Card
- Sapphire Dual-X AMD Radeon R9 280X OC 3GB GDDR5 Graphics Card
- Sapphire Vapor-X AMD Radeon R9 280X OC 3GB GDDR5 Graphics Card

If cost remains a factor, then I'll stick to bidding on ebay as I've been doing [really trying to bid low atm ] However I don't mind tracking the price for one of the above models, if only i can get an idea of what i'm looking for.

Thanks again

The r9 280x is just a re branded 7970, hence both of them are similarly priced. You could even crossfire them with your existing 7970. As far as the reviews go, the Asus DC II has the better cooler with more quality components. But out of the choices, i'd personally go with the Vapor-x version as the cooling performance is really good.
