Intel i7 4770K Overclocking - Need help please.

Thread Starter
First of all I just want to say that, I've been reading others posts here to find an answer but am unable to continue on my own.

I think its due to me not being able to understand how uncore works in all of this and how the DRAM FSB ratio works with or still applies to Haswell?

So anyways, now I have it at the following :

CPU :
CPU Clock : 4200Ghz
Multiplier : 42x
Bus Clock : 100.Mhz
Core Voltage : 1.250v
Uncore Clock : 4000Mhz
Uncore Multiplier : 40x

Memory :
Clock : DDR-1866 / 933Mhz
System Multiplier : 18.66
Voltage : 1.5v
Timings : 10-11-10-30

Temperature :
Idle : 28-30C
Max with IntelBurnTest v2.54 : 81C
Max with AIDA64 System Stability Test : 69C

Motherboard Settings :
CPU VIN LLC : High

Everything seems stable at these settings and I've been using it for a day (mostly reading this forum and playing a game called Ace Online) Average CPU load has been 30% and Temperatures mix max is 33 to 38C when the game is running.

However, if I clock it to 4.3Ghz without changing anything else it becomes unstable. Windows doesnt boot on first cycle, boots on 2nd with option to startup repair. AIDA64 stability test runs fine at higher temps for 72-74C. If I run IntelBurnTest, it gets stuck in like 2 seconds and BSODs.

Is there something I can do to get better clocks? I want a stable 24/7 build. So if you guys think this is good for that, then I dont mind leaving it at the current settings. I just want to make sure i'm getting the best for what I payed for (without destroying it :X)

For information on my rig, please check my signature. Thanks in advance!

Raise VCORE, then move VCORE down until it becomes unstable. So you test with a higher VCORE and then if it's stable you keep lowering it until it becomes unstable again and then raise it.

So for instance, you would set VCORE @ 1.3v and see if you can do like 4.5GHz. If you can pass Intel Burn Test on High or Very High at that. Then you would try lowering it until it becomes unstable again (crash, bsod, freeze) in IBT. Then you would raise it slightly after that and see if it's stable again.

Now Clock is at at 4.4GHz (44x Multiplier) with VCore at 1.3v and VRIN at 1.8v

Temp changes:
Idle : 30-33C
Max with IntelBurnTest v2.54 : 92C
Max with AIDA64 System Stability Test : 75C

CPU-Z Validation : http://valid.canardpc.com/j1qmij

Btw do you know if these are good as memory is concerned? (See Below)

Update :
Now Clock is at at 4.5GHz (45x Multiplier) with VCore at 1.28v and VRIN at 1.8v

Temp changes:
Idle : 30-33C (Slightly higher then when it was 4.2 mostly because of ambient room temps I guess.)
Max with IntelBurnTest v2.54 : 91C
Max with AIDA64 System Stability Test : 77C (5mins into the test temps stay below 74C)

CPU-Z Validation : http://valid.canardpc.com/gtn272

And Just FYI, I am using Real Temp + AIDA64 for the Temp monitoring. IntelBurnTest and AIDA64 for the stability tests. And using AIDA64 to see if there is any CPU thermal throttling going on (so far 0%)

Update : Had to adjust VCore to 1.29 as 1.28 caused it to crash in the 4th run of IntelBurnTest at VeryHigh. Now it seems to be stable. Max Temp is 94C. Guess if I relid the CPU I can get better temps at this clock?

Funny part is it ran IntelBurn at very heavy for 10 passes..but this stupid game that takes 30% cpu brings the whole thing down, just great.

If you want to test Stability, for Long Term. What you want to do is download LinX Linpack. Then What you do is you set the Memory to use almost 70-90% of all your memory, so if you have 16GB of ram you would set it to 10240-14336MB.

Then let it do 20 runs.

If it passes that, you should have a pretty clear indication of long term stability.

But it's going to take a while to do 20 runs at that amount of memory utilization so hopefully you have something you can do in the mean time.

I'm still waiting for my graphics card and using the Intel GPU now. Could that be causing additional heat? Will my temps reduce after I get my dedicated graphics card?

Well that makes sense. I am going to stop overclocking for now. I will wait till I get my graphics card (Should get it on the 2nd of October). Then I will continue. Thanks for all the input BiG StroonZ. Btw, if there a possiblity that after getting my graphics card my VIN, Vcore and Vcache can be reduced?
