How to : Get Extra space on your HDD

I read this somewhere and tried it... it worked for me... on an old 8gig...

THIS IS A TIP TO GET EXTRA SPACE ON YOUR HDD:!!!!!!!Anyway a few words of caution:
1) I cannot accept responsibility for anyones drives.
2) There has been reports of drives choking after their ownners tried this.
3) There has been reports of it working great.

Ok... lets start..
First find yourself a copy of Norton Ghost 2003, build 775.(I wont say where I found mine)

Secondly borrow a friends drive that can boot...

Thirdly install the drive as a slave

Now boot with the drive you want to increase...

Start up Ghost, select basic and backup from the menu. Choose the boot drive as source and the second as target.

Continue until it asks you to reboot....

Now YOU MUST power off the machine just after the BIOS recognises the HDD`s on the post screen before Ghost does anything.....

Swap the drives around and boot from the second HDD.

Then in windows right click on my computer and select manage - Disk management... You should now see extra unallocated space in a partition on your original drive along with another partition called VPSGHBOOT.

Now create a new partition in the currently unallocated space by right clicking on it and selecting the appropriate item from the menu...

ONce that is done you can delete the VPSGHBOOT partition... Now you should have two partitions on your drive and a lot of extrA space....

Warning do not merge the two partitions they will become corrupt...

I got an extra 3 gig on the 8gig I tried it on... didnt wanna use my 80gig in case it messes up....

***? This does not make sense. You can't just create more physical space for data. Your files maybe were HEAVILY fragmented and you just re-ogranized them. The only other possibility is some type of compression which would decrease performance. In any case...
Once again...

The only way I can see this possibly creating more available space is that the NtfsMftZoneReservation setting on the original drive was set to 2, setting aside 25% of the drives capacity for MFT usage, and somehow the process negated the MFT and allowed it to be formatted for general usage.

I've seen a couple cases where this type of thing has happened, including one of my own drives, but I have no clue how it happened.

It sounds like what happens with the big drives, you have a 250GB drive with the MBR set wrong so you only have like 180 available... norton ghost corrects this.

ive heard that you can make a drive say it has more data space that it actually has, the "extra" space doesnt exist - it might say its got more, but it hasn't!
