The reason why directx could be better is because it works on all vendors. So you not limited to amd cards and developers will love that
Mantle is open source so other vendors have option to adopt Mantle to work with theyre hardware so what your saying is BS and not of any use to the conversation. also as Durquavian said it still rely's on the vendors to update it aka add the code for each piece of hardware as does Mantle so it is in no way better or different having DirectX 12 using something similar to Mantle it all rests on the vendors adding hardware specific code for it and also Devs using it in games so it will be in same boat as Mantle is now with short list of support and even shorter list of vendors using it or supporting it.
The whole DX12 low level access is exactly as Mantle is but is just Microsoft crying dont look at Mantle look at us Microsoft DirectX does same thing. The facts are how many will jump onboard with Microsofts version most Devs are fed up with Microsoft and theyre lack of inovation or lack of ability to work with the Devs they have been begging for something like Mantle for 10+ years and only now does Microsoft even raise theyre head and listen put 2 and 2 together they only did so out of fear and fact game Devs and Game engine designers are fastly jumping onboard with Mantle.
I want to also point out many game developers have been looking for other OS's period because many are just flat out upset / fed up with Microsoft and the way they have held market back for many years. Mantle is crossplatform and is designed to work on multiple OS's so again is what Game / Game Engine Developers have been asking for for many years and Microsoft still wants to ignore that other part of theyre request and do Microsoft only DX12 as a knockoff Mantle project.Edited by rickcooperjr - 3/22/14 at 10:13am
