AMD MANTLE Discussion Thread - Page 209

My worst case scenario testing. I have in my possession now a gtx780 and an r9 290. Siege of Shanghai is a great map for showing CPU limits in BF4 under direct X. Server is 64 players conquest.

i5 2500k @ 4.5ghz
Windows 7
Same settings for all cards.
1920x1080
All settings to lowest values
Filtering 16x
Textures to Ultra
Mesh Quality to Ultra
HBAO/SSAO Off

The gtx780 is running at 1176mhz and mem at 6502mhz(highes stable overclock on stock bios), but is downclocking because the CPU isn't feeding it at this location.
V2sq8b0.png

R9 290 Tri-X OC @ stock clocks (1000mhz core) in direct x 11 I didn't have afterburner installed when I took these so I'm not sure if clocks were maxed in this screenshot or not.

I'm not sure how much the skyscraper being down effects performance. All I know is that the gtx780 and r9 290 are hitting the same CPU bottleneck in this location (lowest performing spot I could find on the map). LOD between the amd and nvidia card seems to be a wash in dx11. Some details missing that are in the other screen for both shots, and this may be due to texture crawling because of my lack of AA.

I'll will try later to get a shot in mantle of the same location with the skyscraper up. It should be noted that there are 2 tanks, and more players visible in the mantle shot so it should in theory be more taxing than the two dx11 shots.

Mantle nearly doubles my minimums in this location. It should also be noted that even when dx11 is running at 120fps mantle has a definite perceived smoothness advantage. Something about BF4 also makes anything below 90fps @ 120hz nearly unplayable. It introduces massive amounts of input lag and stuttering.

Pretty good testing I would say you are seeing a big performance increase I myself see large performance increase while using Mantle but I run 2x 290X's in crossfire on 2560x1600 60hz or 75hz screens not sure not at home at sec with Vsync and AA off . I also have horrible issues with the 290X and antistrophic filtering dont know why on other games like Guild Wars 2 . I just couldnt bring myself to buy or use 120hz screens given if you cant run 90+ FPS at all times the sceen gets all weird and ghosty along with shadow blurring and such and 3x 2560x1600 screens are plenty for me for quite a while I believe given I got 3x 32inch screens I sometimes run in eyefinity.

Finally tested 14.3 with 7870 XT (Tahiti LE). Still no change from 14.2, VGA memory leak ensues.

Neither Nvidia nor AMD have cards that fully support DX12's feature set, that much is clear. Pixel ordered UAV (order-independent transparency) is currently only supported by Intel's iGPUs.

and by the time any games use it, even the next gen cards will be old, ha. I am done upgrading for DX features, it takes forever for any amount of games to use the features anyway, there is no point, I am not falling for the hype on DX12.

I am definently with you on that remember when dx11 was suppose to be biggest thing yet alot of games are still coming out using DX9 or DX10 still till this day and even the ones supporting DX11 dont use but about 1/2-3/4 of DX11's ability / features also still till this day only like 1/2 games that come out are even DX11 so what does that say for DX12 and DX11 has been out since October 22 of 2009 and it has not really been used to its potential nor has it been used much at all in games compared to DX9 or DX10 after being out for 5yrs almost 6yrs.

Did you use the AMD clean update - tool?

That seemed to work the trick for me!
I installed a new SSD this past weekend with a fresh install of Windows 7 and the 14.3 drivers and I'm now able to run crossfire on Mantle in BF4 and working great. Before this I would have to run 13.12 drivers to run crossfire in BF4 to keep it from crashing.

Clean update tool? What is that? I uninstalled, boot to safe mode, clean with DDU, boot and install 14.3. Win 8.1 btw.

console limits, let's face it, most of these new games are just console port, so last gen=DX 9 forever........this gen = DX 11 forever(or should I say DX 10?).
