I've been saying it for a while now.

Doesn't sound like a coincidence. However on the other hand its unlikely since Microsoft usually use their own API for sound(xaudio) in their consoles.

I went back and watched the video, it was the ASTOUNDSOUND guy saying his company's plugin would be available on PC, and next-gen consoles.

Well that's insane. What I'm hypothesizing that will happen is the new Xbox one xaudio API will allow hardware calls and utilize Astound Sound as its main method of HRTF....

Mind = Blown!

Some more info,

So TrueAudio won't work unless its coded into the games audio engine either from beginning or patched in. And its not its own API , its a plugin for wwise and Fmod to use hardware accelerated 3D sound. It will most likely use the windows 8 WASAPI and perform direct hardware calls bypassing the mixer. So its logical to assume no TrueAudio for windows 7 as no hardware sound support. Although they didn't mention this so who knows for sure.

The hardware can actually process more in-game sounds, more accurately than the CPU can, giving you better positional audio than even the best receiver could do. It's a digital sound processor... there's no analog signal for the GPU to corrupt.

Also, the area the DSP takes up should be insignificant.

The problem is that it's proprietary... and stuck on $300 GPUs :/ So it'll end up being a rare gimmick like EAX or PhysX.

No no I understand that, but unless the card has its own DAC, it is just going to end up being an interfacing nightmare. For the sake of simplicity and compatibility, they'll probably include a DAC and have the card do the whole audio package.

At this point, you get all the issues I mentioned.

The fancy DPS voodoo magic software stuff is pretty cool... but put it in a dedicated sound card, not on a gpu!

Why should they add a DAC?

In the end, it puts out sound like any other plugin/API. The difference is primarily in "Sound Shaders" (apply this effect if you hear it through a wall, etc) and more channels with more accurate positional audio, which itself is also modification of sound.

It must still down-scale the audio output to match the output configuration you use (Stereo, 5.1, 7.1, etc) and that is still all your soundcard will receive to process and play to you.

In implementation, it will be no different than choosing sound settings in game now, just that like good sound cards support the latest EAX, these AMD cards support True Audio. It will be a checkbox that you can click. There is nothing hardware side that you need to mess with at all, and there is no reason to give you anything hardware side to mess with.

I mean, I can understand having audio passthrough so that you can get your audio fed through the same HDMI cable as your video, but beyond that I just don't see the point. Even the most basic motherboard has onboard audio these days (which I'm just going to wildly assume is at least as good as anything thats going to be stuck directly onto a GPU with all it's crazy high current electrical noises), and those who want something more than onboard aren't going to settle for GPU-Attached. It's just going to artificially increase the cost (and size, and power draw) of GPUs for no good reason.

I have my monitor attached to a receiver, which is then attached to my computer via HDMI. I also have my PS3 attached to the same receiver, so I don't need to constantly be unplugging cables. Better sound on a GPU would definitely be better for my purposes.

Sound cards are antiquated, especially with the current trend of mITX. It's a step forward to have DSP on the video card. How is having real XYZ audio a bad thing? The future of all surround sound is XYZ audio in metadata. It's being developed for movies as we speak. No more discrete mixes, just xyz audio data that will play out of any number of speakers.
It would make no sense to add a DAC. Where would the analogue sound come out of? All the video cards output ports are digital. You think they will add a headphone jack? Doubtful. They would then need to add analogue components to the PCB which would take up more room.

AMD already said it would interface with your sound card at the endpoint.

And GPU audio isn't the end all be all. Now we have to choose between the GPU we want or the sound we want? That seems stupid to me. A sound card gives the right mix of options to customize my PC. Take that away and you have to compromise which should not be happening.

With that being said I'm still excited to see how this playa out.
