First Foray into H20! Advice please dear fellows.

Why hello there most honourable ladies and gentlemen!

I come to you this evening requesting aid in the quest to create the most EPICLY, LEGENDARILY, mediocre WATERCOOLED RIG OF ALL TIME!

Currently I have (on its way here):
  • Heatkiller full block for GTX 670 (NIB)
  • used Swiftech 360mm rad
  • used EK 4.0 pump
  • used compression fittings (not sure on size, I'll find out when they show up tonight or tomorrow)
  • used EK reservoir

Therefore, I'm thinking I will need to procure the following:
  • CPU block (for AM3+)
  • Tubing (probably coloured)
  • Coolant / silver coil / biocide / anti-corrosive (thinking I'll probably go distilled with a coil and coloured tubing)
  • Probably another rad (I want a single GPU and CPU loop)
  • A new case
  • Probably a few more fittings (not sure if I'll get enough initially)

For a case I'm considering the 750D--willing to spend between 100-200 on the case. Also really would like suggestions on coolant to use (or what additives I should add to distilled), and what tube to get / aviod--I've seen lots of plasticizer horrors on here!

I'm thinking distilled + additives and coloured tubing but open to suggestions.

Budget: None. I'm willing to spend more if it's worth it, but I really have no need for crazy insane cooling. The budget for the case is 100-200 dollars. For the parts I wouldn't want to spend more than 150-200 (not including the money I've already spent). but less is better.

Any suggestions for parts / advice for first time water coolers are more than welcome!

Thanks in advance, and cheers from Canadialand!

Currently considering the XSPC Raystorm--$59.99 in Canada

I can certainly vouch for the Raystorm, although mine is the Intel version, which I purchased from Dazmode.
Keeping your budget in mind, buying from Canadian sources will save a lot on shipping and duty compared to buying from the US.
I'd suggest looking at both Dazmode and NCIX. Daz is about the best Canadian source for water cooling parts, although NCIX has some good items as well. NCIX has some good sales on cases every week, and you can also get Swiftech and XSPC rads there at good prices.
It's probably wise to go with the new Primochill Advanced LRT tubing to avoid any issues, also on sale at NCIX this week.

Case choice is very subjective, but you want to make sure you get a suitable case for your cooling loop, especially the rads.
Edit:
I just had a look at the Corsair 750D case you are considering, it's a good looking case imo. Looks like it's currently out of stock at NCIX though.
It has room for your 360 rad on top, and you could add a 240 rad or possibly a 280, which combined with the 360 would be plenty for your system.

i wouldn't recommend the 750d tbh. upon seeing hardware canucks review, it was rather disappointing in terms of watercooling capabilities, especially in that price range. id highly recommend the fractal design arc xl as it is a brand new release as well. its more modular, provides better expansion, looks better and more importantly more cheaper than the 750d. you have most of the components to start you wc setup. as for cpu blocks, go with what you find visually appealing. also, get quality fans that will provide sufficient static pressure for your radiators. higher fpi, means more cfm and noise. and don't forget to add a drain port!

Thanks for the input guys.

NCIX and DazMode were actually the two sites I've been looking at--ordered a bunch of stuff from NCIX in the past and love them--shipping is a little pricey but they're quick and package everything well, great customer service.

As far as cases go, I am not too bothered that the 750D can't support more rads, because I wouldn't use more than one or two beyond the 360mm.
I also prefer the look of the 750D, though the Arc XL doesn't look bad--it's just boxy.
However, I haven't heard too much about the Fractal Design Arc XL. I did see it can fit a slim 360, and it is much cheaper. I'll look into it more, thanks!
Funny, it's 150 on NCIX but 100 on Newegg. Impulse buy? Hmmmmmmm

I know to look for static pressure on fans, but any suggestions?

And how much tubing should I get? I'm just doing a single GPU and CPU loop, but I want to have some spare tubing for obvious reasons--especially since it's my first build.

Also, suggestions on coolant / what additives to use?

I've recently heard some bad things about silver coils, is it better to go PT Nuke / Anti-Corrosive?

Thanks again!

The shipping can seem pricey at times. But it's nothing compared to the shipping costs and the duty that our fine government charges us, when you purchase from outside of Canada.rolleyes.gif

But you have a good plan for keeping the cost within reason, and buying some good used parts is a great way to save money.

There are so many good cases out there now, you have to decide what you like the best. That Arc XL suggested by Killa Cam looks like a good value.

I really like the Scythe AP-15 Gentle Typhoons for rad fans, but that's the only fan I've used for rads. I'd suggest checking out the Corsair SP 120 fans as well, and I'm sure there will be plenty of other suggestions.

I used about 15 feet of tubing for my build, including the detachable drain tube I made. You might get away with a ten foot pack, but It's always nice to have some extra tubing around. I bought 20 feet of Durelene tubing from Sidewinder Computers in the US, but I'd recommend getting the Primochill Advanced LRT from NCIX.
Again, you have to decide whether you want to run distilled or use a colored coolant. I really like Mayhems Pastel Ice White, I ran distilled for the initial leak tests, then switched to the Mayhems coolant. There is a Mayhems thread here as well. It's a personal choice though, I didn't want to have to mess with a kill coil and questionable additives, and the white coolant works well for my build.

This case is BALLER for the price

http://www.phanteksusa.com/products/phanteks-enthoo-primo

The raystorm is a very good decision.

As for the coolant... don't use a silver kill coil. There is just too much info out there as to why not to use one but I think a google search of "silver kill coil" and then click on images is enough to explain it.

Dazmode protector would be my first recommendation to add to distilled water. Nothing else is needed above that and it will kill algae and protect from corrosion. Otherwise PTNuke PHN (clear) or Copper (blue) but those won't protect from corrosion just kill algae.

That case is nice and all...but I was thinking the 750D is at the high end of what I wanted to spend on a case, nevermind $250!

Yeah I remember months ago when I was looking at water cooling everyone was all about the kill coils.

Then recently saw a bunch of scary images about it and I'm scared off, lol. Seems like it can react badly with nickel?

I think I might end up going with the protector since I'll be buying (at least some stuff) from Daz, thanks!

By the way, first round of parts arrived! wheee.gif

Rad is swiftech, EK Res, Bitspower Fittings, EK 4.0 Pump.

Got it all (used) for $50 biggrin.gif
