Everyone should be applauding (the promise of) more performance, if it tanks it tanks but we gave it a shot right. Personally it really doesn't matter where it comes from. Atm AMD have strategic muscles Nvidia simply does not have. Nvidia have some great products but in the bigger picture they are a one trick pony, a good one though. I too have the odd Stallman gene but in this case I am not too worried, there will always be fierce competition within the gaming space.

I don't think it is a question about performance. If Mantle improves performance great, but the games are still going to have to run well on directx, because the PC user base does not just consist of AMD GCN cards. If there is any extra work to get Mantle support on desktop computers as opposed to just having directx support, it will still not be wise choice if time constraints are there. Remember, most of the computers graphics market is either Intel (integrated) or Nvidia (discrete). You don't want to cripple the games for these players by just going the Mantle route, so directx support needs to be there and be able to run decently as well.

Who buys a top-tier gpu for the game(s) it comes bundled with? rolleyes.gif I'd say they're a nice bonus to the card, not the other way around.

But if it's on console aswell, porting the game to pc should be a breeze. Mantle is already implemented, pretty much only thing they have to do is rewrite for DX, which they would have to do in the first place.

I wouldn't say Mantle is in it's infancy. It's been in development for years and is being brought to market. Do you think it's a coincidence that both of the next-gen consoles are using AMD hardware and are coming to market around the same time mantle is? The Xbox One and PS4 are both designed around AMD APUs and utilize an AMD low-level API to get direct access to the hardware. You've got to be kidding if you don't think Mantle is at least an iteration of that API.

DirectX destroys GPU performance by being a universal API. It sacrifices the performance of your GPU so that developers can write code that'll work for every GPU architecture.
Mantle is the opposite. It's specific to GCN. Therefor, the game must be built around these Mantle instructions that are specifically for GCN GPU's, and nothing else.

In the past GPU architectures were designed around DirectX and OpenGL, mostly considering only Windows plattform.

GCN and mantle is first attempt to do it from different point of view - like "we have standardized GPU, its backward compatible for DirectX and OpenGL, but it has its own API."

(yes, there have been attempts in the past, but not in this scale, and not it such situation in gaming industry)

besides, Nvidia still has their trump card:

1. enable the last compute unit on GK110 and release TITAN II

2. rebrand current TITAN as GTX 785

At the same time, we're hearing about SteamOS and Steamboxes, which are looking to compete with console gaming, where Mantle would allow console games to port into SteamOS usable programming quickly, and AMD is fully on-board with that it seems. Within the SteamOS, we expect less overhead from Linux than we do Windows, and now even less overhead with Mantle than the other APIs. Seems like the SteamBox is getting even more desirable for gamers, as they will get the benefits from a console, with the ability to upgrade the hardware. This is also part of the game market, my point being that PC is not the only one that will benefit from Mantle.

And only when it is using a seemingly proprietary technology that is only available in this one game for now and only a couple of months after the game's release?

Yup, sure does sound like a win.

Well one game for now. DICE is implementing Mantle support for the Frostbite 3 engine, so chances are future games using Frostbite 3 will also support it.

AMD may be setting themselves and the market up to go exclusively APUs and consoles. tongue.gif

Keep getting that feeling of HSA, sort of. And to the open point or dual API, think like ICC, depending on your hardware you will run one if you meet the specifications, prob not something you choose.
