Then nVidia can make their own API. Google 3dfx Glide. It was a nice API that worked better on the games that supported it than Direct3d or OpenGL. There were Glide wrappers that would let other GPUs use Glide (emulated), but was not officially supported by 3dfx (actually hated by them) and did not work as well as a native Voodoo card. I used to use them a lot back in the day.

Closed source and proprietary are two different things, although if Mantle is used in consoles it's understandable why it would not be shared with the public.

I've used a 7870 to play StarCraft II 1080 maxed in OpenSUSE with no problems. With 13.4 WHQL Linux.

Troll harder, it isn't obvious enough.

They still have to do DirectX for everything non-GCN. Game developers just get to copy/paste the Mantle code for AMD's GCN stuff to make porting easier, and give AMD a nice boost in the process.

If a game dev writes only Mantle code and it will be on PC, that dev is a jerk.

The Mantle API is C++ OpenCL optimized for GPU workloads. Effectively, Bolt for gaming.

Absolutely this. I cannot remember any game that was Glide only. And a dev wouldn't be stupid enough to limit their game to only half of the available market.

Wow, its a whole new frontier. I guess AMD is hoping that a majority of big titles get released in Mantle so that when reviewers go to compare video cards in the future all the GCN cards perform way better, not because of hardware superiority but simply because the games themselves are coded for that hardware. Sneaky move...

It wont take long for Nvidia to come up with something similar to Mante. Not sure why so many worries?
If Mantle indeed is XBone and PS4 API I can see a pattern forming. If it really is that simple for devs to port their console stuff (who are made from scratch with mantle in mind, remember) then it wouldn't be that big of a hassle to make a mantle edition for the pc together with their main porting, done in DX. I mean if DX11 work takes 9 months and mantle only a few weeks why not?

Now, If mantle does offer the type of performance for GCN that nekachuk insinuates, we will see very screwy results. BF4 will use it and I expect to see a 7770 going toe to toe with much stronger geforces like the GTX660. This type of optimization can really turn the tables, imagine radeons consistently outperforming more pricey geforces on certain AAA titles. EA will play this card. I am not particularly happy with such a situation though, fragmentation is rarely a positive thing.

The problem with this arguement is that it is based on steam survey. Most of the machines found there do not even have GPUs capable of gaming on modern titles therefore are irrelevant when we talk about gaming crowd-their owners aren't potential buyers of the games in question, they can't run the damn things even if they wanted to. Hell, only 65% of cards are DX11 capable even. We can safely deduct almost all intel integrated stuff together with the various old ATi HD and mobile nvidia 200/210 etc. Suddenly that generic "5%" is a much higher percentage of the relevant population.
