If Mantle indeed is XBone and PS4 API I can see a pattern forming. If it really is that simple for devs to port their console stuff (who are made from scratch with mantle in mind, remember) then it wouldn't be that big of a hassle to make a mantle edition for the pc together with their main porting, done in DX. I mean if DX11 work takes 9 months and mantle only a few weeks why not?
Now, If mantle does offer the type of performance for GCN that nekachuk insinuates, we will see very screwy results. BF4 will use it and I expect to see a 7770 going toe to toe with much stronger geforces like the GTX660. This type of optimization can really turn the tables, imagine radeons consistently outperforming more pricey geforces on certain AAA titles. EA will play this card. I am not particularly happy with such a situation though, fragmentation is rarely a positive thing.

The problem with this arguement is that it is based on steam survey. Most of the machines found there do not even have GPUs capable of gaming on modern titles therefore are irrelevant when we talk about gaming crowd-their owners aren't potential buyers of the games in question, they can't run the damn things even if they wanted to. Hell, only 65% of cards are DX11 capable even. We can safely deduct almost all intel integrated stuff together with the various old ATi HD and mobile nvidia 200/210 etc. Suddenly that generic "5%" is a much higher percentage of the relevant population.Edited by Kuivamaa - 9/26/13 at 6:40pm
