[MaximumPC]AMD: R9 290X Will Be "Much Faster Than Titan in Battlefield 4" - Page 38

Anyway, if this is how AMD wins the performance crown, then so be it. Looks like my next card will be a cheap $200 card if it can be expected to perform like a top level Nvidia card. Imagine that, there will be even less need to have a top tier card if even the mid range cards get a huge boost from Mantle. Unless AMD starts intentionally crippling Mantle on the cheaper cards, so they can justify the sell of the more expensive cards.

Remember that at this point Mantle is still a marketing pitch to consumers and an investment pitch to developers. With a pitch this hard, I would expect that draw call reduction claim in at least a few cross-architecture benchmarks before I start waving my wallet and induce others to follow. As of late, there is only marginal improvements in computing so just asking for some "analytics".

Why would devs use anything nvidia came up with? Devs would use Mantle simply because they're already useing Mantle for the consoles.

They probably will not use it for PC exclusives. Why would they want to write for yet another API? Same problem for whatever nVidia does.

You should really live under a rock to think Nvidia wont regain the crown back. I am saying they will make Manta like way to keep em in game.

... You didn't even read what I posted, did you.

There would be zero incentive to use anything nVidia makes to compete with Mantle. The only reason Mantle will be used is because of consoles.

Oops forgot about that part. And you missed the 7750. Kinda surprised there were no 7790 or 7990 listed.

Heck, I'm already thinking about how I will be moving forward.

AMD card for gaming, NVIDIA card for professional use. eek.gif

The only reason I bought an NVIDIA card in the first place was because it provided me with the best of both worlds.

This. Potentially. Changes. Everything.

Yeah, it seems spot on and even more spot on than it reads at first since at that time OpenGL or DirectX were not even so extensively offloading almost everything they could on the graphics card, nowadays 90% of what we were doing on the main system back then is offloaded on the card before even starting rendering anything, so those 'draw calls' etc. AMD quotes aren't even done at the extend of that old age (by any stretch of the imagination).

And it's definitely mainly related to what is going on to consoles than to us.

Let's just hope Anandtech's speculations are completely off the mark, that's been known to happen, right, right?

What ever happened to AMD supporting "open standards". rolleyes.gif

Um.. considering consoles use GCN, Mantle will be easy for devs to get into.

That and you forget Frostbite 3 will support Mantle, meaning a bunch of games next year that people actually want to play will use it - Dragon Age, Mirror's Edge, Battlefront, Need for Speed, and any future frostbite games.

We'll be hearing and seeing more of Mantle in a year.

i edited in the 7750 and i am also surprised no 7790 or 7990 but to be fair; the non DX 10/11 gpus could be thrown out.

but my post was more directed at being aware of what data was included in your number - no hard feelings, eh?

I am not going to dispute the 5% number...though there are some APUs in this boat as well, but you could have and API so low level you have to keep it under your desk and not get any real performance out of it. 5% sounds like a legit number even without a Steam Survey. If it takes off on the consoles though...boom...It will be all over the world over night and AMD will have games getting made that can be ported to the PC with little work, but only work on their architecture. And the console will need a low level API...if they don't use Mantle they will have to cook something up themselves or demand AMD make something different.

My main argument is that I'm personally pretty sure the performance will not be very impressive. The reason for this is that OpenGL and DirectX already offload tons of what they do before even beginning rendering anything so we are already centuries away from the first days of 3d programming when an API like this would be revolutionary. Nowadays it's mainly 'tweaks', AMD basically mainly throws APIs and ideas around in case something catches on and holds programmer's intellectual property captive, but it will most likely fail again and it only has a chance in consoles.
