Nowadays it's mainly 'tweaks', AMD basically mainly throws APIs and ideas in case something catches and hole programmer's intellectual property captive, but it will most likely fail again and it only has a chance in consoles.

I don't think it will come down to the performance...though there should be some gain. It will come down to if a developer uses it to make a console game...with minimal work they could port it over to the PC with the stipulation that it requires a GCN capable GPU. So we could start seeing games released on Xbox One, PS4...and GSN capable PCs. i think that might effect some one's hardware purchases.

We still don't have the details of Mantle. that will be revealed at AMD Developer Summit 2013 from Nov 11 - 14. Johan Andersson of DICE is a keynote speaker. the indications are Mantle is open.

http://www.techspot.com/news/54134-amd-launches-mantle-api-to-optimize-pc-gpu-performance.html

"We've been told at the GPU14 Tech Day event that the Mantle API is open, so theoretically Nvidia could purpose the technology in their GPUs. It should also make cross-development between PC and console games a lot easier, and also more incredible for those with a high-performance AMD GPU."

If it takes off on the consoles though...boom...It will be all over the world over night and AMD will have games getting made that can be ported to the PC with little work, but only work on their architecture. And the console will need a low level API...if they don't use Mantle they will have to cook something up themselves or demand AMD make something different.

for some reason that is getting me to think of all the people whose hardware limitations have them harvesting crops in farmville as an enjoyable gaming experience . . and chuckling.

If we're only talking about ease of use then it might be even harder. They are comfortable to their knowledge and engines and all they already have. It's mainly about performance to them.

All they already have is gone...none of it will work on the new consoles. They are starting from scratch. Some older engines will get updated to work on them of course...but they will need a new API.

So.. you're armchairing and already came to the conclusion that something AMD has been building for years to coincide with their console wins will lead to negligible gains. DICE is implementing it on their own engine for the hell of it, all cause AMD asked them to..

...right.

All future Frostbite 3 games will use Mantle ( Mirror's Edge, Battlefront, Need For Speed, Dragon Age, etc )

There is a bunch of discussion on it over at Beyond3D, and the opinion there is that it will be GCN only.

Their marketing made it very clear that it developed for GCN, and if AMD didn't make it support VLIW, then Nvidia isn't going to be able to make it support Kepler (or probably even Maxwell). The best they'll be able to do is make a wrapper for it, like they used to do for Glide.

You have no idea at this point what games will be using the Frostbite 3 engine. Plus it is just it is known the Frostbite 3 will be using it. Every major Engine could be using it by this time next year for all we know at this point. It could also be patched out of Frostbite 3 and scrapped too.
