The Mercury Playback Engine was CUDA only in CS5, so going NVIDIA was literally the only option for me back then.

Lol, and at the end of the day we all know that all those Frostbite 3 games will end up supporting Mantle. I mean its cool to not believe something until its confirmed but we all know this is going to be the case...

some folks just like to present only the part of the facts to support what they claim; the worse lie is one that is buried in truth. having sat in more than one power point presentation given by a manufacturing rep; they most always start out with qualifying their experience about the market; johan discussing what games frostbite/dice have in development. then he goes on to talk about PC hardware, then console hardware, contrasting the two and then at 11:27 he starts talking about mantle.

see the problem with "reading between the lines" is folks will put things there that they want to see without hardly any basis in fact. so the only things that are obvious is FB3 will develop mantle for BF4 as a pilot program and distribute it in december with more information to come later because there are several unexplored possibilities.

anything more is just wishful thinking at this time.

"Mantle is the direct result of a number of AAA game developers asking us for something like this because of several constraints they're experiencing with existing PC graphics APIs. Those developers want to get closer to the metal and able to achieve more with the GPU(s) on their PC without the API getting in the way of this effort. "More with more" is the term used by Raja and it couldn't be more spot on.AMD listened to developer feedback and entered this venture with Johan Andersson leading the charge. Johan has a passion for writing efficient code that can allow him to accomplish his technical vision and Mantle exists to serve this purpose.

Mantle is not for every developer. It is a low-level graphics API designed to drive the GPU in the most efficient manner. This level of access requires a bit more development effort than existing APIs to reap the rewards it provides. AMD remains committed to support DirectX and OpenGL and to keep optimizing our drivers for those APIs. Mantle is an option that some developers may choose, but it does not affect those that wish to keep using existing APIs.

Some technical concerns are mentioned on this thread. The Mantle API has been in design and development for more than 2 years and rest assured we've had some time to think about the best way to address those (and loads of others). More technical details about Mantle will be revealed in due course. Johan is a keynote speaker at the AMD Developer Summit (11-14 November, San Jose).

So you think DICE invested 2+ years in developing Mantle for just BF4. Definitely not. This kind of effort is done because DICE wants all Frostbite 3 / EA games to benefit. Frostbite 3 supports Mantle. BF4 is the first showcase. All future Frostbite 3 titles will support Mantle.

I am thinking this is either going to be big...or flop hard. I don't think there is going to be any middle ground with some games using it and some not. It is all up to the developers to decide to use it or not.

Any one know what the PS3 and the Xbox 360 used for an API? I think I read once that there was a lot of different ones...some developers would make one for a specific game, but I am not sure if I understood it when I read it or if I am remembering correctly. If Mantle will be of use to developers for consoles I think it will be an over night success just as a time saver providing it works.

Yup.

Considering that it's an engine, and the only difference between the games will be levels, models, and other assets... yes, we do know it. That is the entire point of an Engine. If the Engine supports Mantle, all things using the Engine will support Mantle.

Example: Wing Commander Saga and Diaspora are both standalone games built on the FreeSpace Open Engine. They all use OpenGL like FSO, they use OpenAL like FSO, they use the FRED editor and POF models like FSO because it's just FSO with different assets.

None of these game developers that will be making games on Frostbite have any say at all, aside from bug fixes or feature requests, what goes into the Engine itself. Thinking that BF4 will be the only game running on Frostbite to support Mantle is ignorant, because Frostbite itself will support Mantle.

I understand that this is a level above what most gamers would understand about the games they're playing, but come on man, it's not tough logic. rolleyes.gif

oh yeah considering it takes two years to develop a game . .that's not an outlandish amount of time to spend developing an API for it. don't make sound like it was an unusual investment.
