The only REAL issue is losing ground for Nvidia if Mantle really takes off and delivers what is promised, which may mean much faster GPU's coming from NV than AMD due to brute force being needed.

However, as a Gamer, i cannot see this as much of an issue, the pricing on these new cards seem great so far, and competitive, the only worry is that BF4 will run like rubbish on intel/NV parts due to the extensive AMD optimization, but my words are to be took with a grain of salt, as i have no solid proof of this.

Just things to consider, competition is really what drives the industry forward, not separate ways.

Underneath the surface, all this seems to be about a lot more than R9 290x and Titan (though that too is important for OCN users, obviously). But underneath it all, if this (ie Mantle) is an OpenSource development, has Frostbite 3 / EA support, an entrance into the upcoming console wars AND is usable by Steam's new OS and SteamBox hardware w/Linux, NVidia may have to worry less about this than Microsoft

Some how I don't like how the industries are doing at the moment. Making things exclusives to another competitors, they are making a challenge by splitting the market and locking people into one or another. They are actually hurting the consumers (aka us). No one has the money to switch between competitors every 6-10 months for a specific game? 

 

I'm not going to switch to AMD because of the Mandle... for BF4. Developer should make up their mind and speak for the consumers or else many wouldn't even bother to support. I'll look elsewhere.

Mantle is an added bonus for people have GCN, just like physx. There are no reason for developer not to use them when they are already developing titles in GCN consoles.

Mantle is Open to developer but it is Not open for architecture, Nvidia can make their next gen GPU mimic GCN arch to support this API. This is sort of like x86 compiler.

AMD has repeatedly said GCN is their long term architecture, so even there are changes in future GPUs, it will be minor changes tweaks etc. sort of like Intel Haswell vs Pentium 4 = all of them work on x86 programs. Mantle is low level API, but we will never get as close as how we see it happened in console, because there will be a few diff GCN designs in the future. 10-20% bonus performance is the rough estimate I can guess. but It can be as high as 50%(see dirt 3 lol)

But really people are looking at this the wrong way, the only ones who should feel threatened by this is microsoft & directX. Devs could easily just code for Mantel and OpenGL and be runnable on every hardware/OS out there. *Compared to currently where they're coding for directX console, directX desktop, PS4 OpenGL, and occasionally OpenGL for desktop.*

I don't think he's saying Mantle will only be used for BF4, he's just saying that there is no official confirmation that the rest of the FB3 games will support it. I'm pretty sure he knows they will though... wink.gif
